Keiths New Tank Journal

I reckon a 10 footer would do :hey:

A lfs near me has a fully grown one but it has ti turn round upside down, so would probably need a 10x5x4?

How big do tiger shovelnoses get? It's a great looking fish non the less. :good:

Loving the picture of Keith checking him out :p

 mmmm lunch says Keith!! He's gorgeous though even if he's picky who is allowed to share his tank.
i would be veru suprised if Keith went for the catfish. he only dislikes other cichlids that are over 4 inches :S

Keith has been a right thorn in my side when trying to stock this tank and ive had to let some stunning fish pass as i know he just wouldnt tolerate them. it just goes to show how he has got under my skin and become part of the family.....

Your so going to end up with a pond :)

guys stop giving me ideas.......... :grr:

a tropical pond in the UK just wouldnt be achievable without costing a small fortune to heat.

as a RTC or TSN has been one of my dream fish for as long as i can remember i just had to get one even if it is just for a year or so. im not sure i can even squeeze anything bigger than a 6x3x3 in the house which im not sure would be big enough when the cats fully grown

ive read that the X breeds dont grow as fast as their parents would and dont get as big so maybe i can keep him for a bit longer than a RTC or TSN :hey:

I can't believe you've got one of these fish

I've seen them a lot for sale around me, and it dismays me so much. I can't believe people are buying them

There is a RTC in one of my LFS and that's in a bl%dy huge tank and it still looks cramped. Not a fish that should be in home aquaria IMO.

well like i said this is a fish or a cross between the 2 that ive always wanted to keep. i know i cant keep it forever but i can give it a great home until its too big.
plenty of people buy these and i agree it shouldnt really be for sale but its better of in my tank for now than the tiny lfs tank or a 2ft tank i could have ended up in.

who knows it may become my new wet pet and a bigger tank might be had in time.....

Trouble is though, if people keep buying these fish then the LFS will just import more in to replace them. So they never get out of the trade. Supply and demand - if there is no demand, the supply will shrivel up.

There is a 4ft ish RCT in my LFS. It isn't just a long fish, it's a massively wide fish including its whiskers, and a very deep fish too. The tank it is in at this shop is about 10ft long, 4ft wide, 4 ft high. But the fish can barely turn around, and is always resting on the bottom when we go in there. It looks very miserable.
The reason they have it is someone bought the fish as a baby, with no idea how big they get, then it changed homes various times before landing up here.

I know this is a cross, so may not get so big, however its going to be huge whatever way you look at it. As I said before they are not just long, they are massive width ways and in depth as well.

That aside, as a carnivorous catfish, they will require a hell of a lot of feeding.

I should imagine you've seen this, but maybe for other readers' benefit: some photos of RCT

I can't speak for the other cat its crossed with, as got no knowledge of them, but they seem the same type of thing.

For those who are questioning whether the oscar will like this cat, well, its more like the cat liking the oscar for lunch...

Tizer - funny guy

i hear what you are saying chilli but this lfs sells RTC nad TSN and X's by the dozen. if its responsible then maybe drop them a line its A5 aquatics Leicestershire.
i doubt 1 less sale will prove a point tbh, i think there would have to be an arranged agreement between every fish keeper in the country or even world to not buy these fish to cause an impact and over a good length of time too.

what i can do is give it a great home until it either gets too big or i get a bigger tank. i have also known people keep these fish along with big cichlids like oscars and im sure it will be a while before he sees Keith as lunch......

the way i saw it is that it could stay at the lfs and perish or be bought and stuck in a small tank or come home with me and live well for a bit :good:

as much as i love the fish im really tempted to move on my BGK as i never see the darn thing...... its about 9 inches as well :grr:

my TSN X RTC seems to be very much the carnivore at the minute....

it wont eat anything but meaty treats! i hope it will accept pellets soon as a dieat of prawns, musssels, bloodworm, brine shrimp might sound nice but they are all frozen products and not a full balanced diet. ill keep trying the pellets, im sure he will take them eventually.

he also hand feeds from me which is pretty cool for now.......!!!!!!!!!!

oh by the way we have named him Frank
