Jack's Marine Adventure!

just a tip for everybody, NEVER USE BARDILLS! theyre the worst LFS ive ever had to deal with! i got a replacement but theyre trying to say that my nitrite and nitrate are high! my kits read 0 and so do my mates! theyre using nutrafin test kits.

im so peed off! this guy was in their talking bull crap to my parents whilst i was getting so wound up and angry. he was saying that because my tanks new i will get nitrite and nitrate for the first 6 months so i cant add fish in that period! BULL ####

he also said that high nitrite will be because im acclimatizing my fish for 3 hours. he obviously knows nothing and now my parents think im an absolute #### that knows nothing.

the water sample had been in the container for 6 hours could that have made a difference? the container was sterile!
got a replacement though but its about an inch bigger than the current one :(

its funny, the tank i got them from is now empty and has the remnants of an anemone in their :grr: and he tried to say that he sold them all. and he wouldnt let me buy a TSB niether. im never going their again, MA may be over priced, but i know i can trust them!

Sounds like a typical LFS halfwitt!

It never ceases to amaze me how much crap (many) LFS employees come out with, this one is clearly typically clueless, working in a shop makes you a shop assistant not an expert.

I especially like the bit where acclimating your fish for 3 hours will give your tank high nitrites

Hope he didn't convince your parents that he knows what hes talking about, especially if they are helping fund your tank.

Anyone armed with nutrafins wonderfully inaccurate test kits will come up with all sorts of bad readings.

Oh and having your water sample in a container for a few hours isn't going to change it.

Exactly

This guy seems a complete idiot

And i always thought nutrafin test kits were Freshwater only

the email reply confirms this

Print the e-mail, and take it to the shop. Call the assistant that served you, and ask him to get the manager over to listen to the conversation. Explain to the manager what went on, then produce Nutrafin's e-mail to prove your argument. Then go on to say you found his customer service very poor, patronising and arrogant, and that you are very un-happy about the quality service offered there after you hit problems. With luck, the manager may treat you to some freebies to make up for it, have a harsh word with Mr. Knowitall, and sign him up for some customer service skills training. On the other had, you may be asked to leave, which probably isn't the worst thing to happen to you. In fact, the ban may stop you buying a duff fish from them :shifty: There is a chance that that assistant is just one bad apple in an otherwise good shop

I know you know it already, but if a retailer shows you reluctance to replace stock that you know didn't die due to your care shortly after purchase, and all evidence you can produce backs this up, it probably is best not to deal with them again

All the best
Rabbut

i will do what everybody has said, hopefully i get some store credit :D

Very doubtfull, very likely you will just look foolish going in all guns blazing and will be wasting your time...At the end of the day they already gave you your replacement fish. Good luck if you do though.

The best way to deal with shops that do this is with your money, i.e spend it elsewhere.

Not to mention that on all of my old nutrafin test kits(at least 2 years old, gathering dust in the back of the cabinet) it clearly states for fresh and saltwater, some having a different colour scale on the back of the instructions for salt water. Prehaps they had so many complaints about inaccuracy they have since stopped selling them for SW??????

well if there is no positive outcome im not going back there, and i will tell them that.

the test cards they used had no indication of salt or freshwater on them, but the nitrite reading came back pink and the nitrate a pale orange, he reckons 10ppm nitrate is going to kill a fish, although my test kits are saying different things.

just a bit of a scientific question for anybody that has an answer as im really paranoid now.

if my tank had a nitrite reading of 1ppm and a nitrate reading of 25ppm like the halfwit said, would it kill inverts instantly? as im aware that it has the same effect as copper. and will kill within a few hours.
does the same apply to fish? will the nitrite kill them too? or if theyre hardy enough could they take it?

my test kits still read 0 on everything, but im still paranoid :(

Sorry to hear of your further problems Truck  but I have to agree with Johnny.t on this one, if you go in all guns blazing they are likely to close ranks and have answers for everything  and you will walk out even more annoyed, unfortunately shops nowadays don't seem to care about an individual as there is always someone that will buy from these people
I would talk with your feet, if you have another LFS to use then I would use them and forget about Bardills. You will never win with these places :<

i might give wharf aquatics a whirl, they seem pretty good and i think 1entra (is that right?) goes there too.

i think i will right a polite but argumentative letter to them and see what they say

Maybe you should take a different approach? If you go in with the email saying you were concerned because if they are relying on these tests for their own marine tanks then that could be a problem for them and advise them that they really should change! You migt end up getting some respect for being so helpful which in turn would make you feel a whole lot better as you did get one up on them but in a different way!

sounds like its worth a visit! thanks ben :good:

I did what glider girl said and went down this afternoon to bardills and i asked them to test their tanks with the nutrafin test kits and guess what happened!!! their system has a nitrite reading of 1 and a nitrate reading of 50!!! i then got out my API and test it and it came back as 0 on both, then i used a salifert on their system, same results. they apologized and i spoke to the manager infront of this halfwit, and told him what he said to me, the manager was shocked  no surprise! he then gave me a £20 credit note!

lets just say its been a very productive day!

i bought a new mixing pump today as well after accidently burning the other one out  when i was acclimatizing the clown i plugged what i though to be a heater in, but it was the pump
