Is This Forum Been Ruined By Imature New Users?

I belong to quite a few forums and havent been to this one in awhile..............to the people complaining about noobs.........This is so simple, if you dont want to answer their questions.....DONT!..........Go onto the next thread and take your vast fish knowledge with you......Someone will help them out if they so choose......You cant control if they take your advice or not.....Why get your blood pressure up over something you cant control...................As stated, by alot of members, we were all noobs at one time.....Where did you get your fish knowledge?..........Books?.....More than likely, before the internet, that was our only option........Did you only read the book once?........Or did you go back and reference what you read.....I bet you did..........So asking the same question for a noob is no different IMO........Yes, some members here (and other forums as well) should do a little more research, but when you do a google search, guess where it brings you sometimes?...........Here and other forums...........Sometimes thier research brought them here...........And from some members are welcomed because they dont know everything you do.............I thought forums where for questions, debates and advice?...........Someone please tell me what they are for, if thats not the case?......

To the members who are getting on the mods case.......give it up!......Dont you have anything better to do than judge someone else's ability to handle a certain situation......Obviously you have the time to berate someone for their task of taking care of this website, why dont you take that time and become a mod or create your own forum?......You can play God and dictate who can ask questions and who is allowed to answer......I wouldnt want to be a mod on any forum........Its bad enough they have to deal with everything technical, but now they have to deal with elementary school crap from adults............Most mods on fish forums have forgotten more about fish than the people berating them will ever know...........

If you dont like what you see at a certain forum, why do you keep coming back?.....their are many more options for you if you dont like this one...........With 20 years experience at this i have seen and heard it all from noobs and experienced fish keepers, but ultimately, they are my fish to raise, breed and keep...........I still will make future mistakes, but i also might be able to offer good advice from my mistakes for noobs and experience fishkeepers to heed............

There is more to mod life than just sitting around moving & deleting posts.
A certain amount of self help and self policing within the sections by the membership goes a long way to helping us do our job too, If you feel something is not right then hit the Report Button.
I used the report button to report an abusive post about 4 days ago. The poster told another member to "shut their mouth"...........the post is still there!!! I was also under the impression that "self-policing" was frowned upon by Mods/Admin?
I don't think I received that report so I can't comment bt if you will PM me with the thread I will certainly look into it. We are currently working on covering some forums better. The way the system works, if you use the "Report" button, the email report goes to the mods assigned to that forum. So if you report a thread in Tropical Discussion, the report goes to Inchworm, BTT and me. If there are no mods specifically assigned to a forum, it goes to all of us. Unfortunately, we have a couple forums that the mods assigned haven't been as active lately so any reports in there may not be seen in a timely manner. As I said, we are working on correcting that issue and hopefully, the next software update will have a much better system.

I cant pm so the thread is http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=298664 Post#8

I am new here, but am on a number of different forums. Not all fish ones, but allsorts.

Personally the thing that i find objectionable is the acronyms used instead of swearing, or the use of #### etc... Equally, a member telling another member to "shut their mouth" is also rude, despite what the other person had said.

Views can be expressed without resorting to the use of such terms, and personally i find these posts to be bordering on Flaming. Another forum i am on, similar to this but a different animal has rules listed about such terms. If a member uses an acronym for the f word, they get warned!

You think that's something new on any forum?

We average 25 new members every day, 120 new topics every day, and 1200 new posts every day. You are pointing out one member out of over 5,000 who have joined since that member joined. I will agree that the member you linked to won't go far in life with that attitude, but the percentage of members who post in that manner is actually quite small.

Yes I completely agree with you. There always have and will be people like that.

Although I don't think it is all new users and I am sure this has happened many times and not just recently.

In fairness, I think the "new" member comments are being taken out of context. I dont believe that Mark (Jenclibee) meant in anyway that the people who come on asking genuine questions concerning their tanks, being new to the hobby and looking for advice are what is being referred to. There isnt a single member here who begrudges those questions and isnt more than happy to answer them as and when required. For those that do get fed up occassionally of the same questions, you just take a break and dont answer them, unless you feel you have the relevant experience or information to give.

The complaint is those members who come on, whether they be new to fishkeeping or whether they have been keeping fish for 20+ years, that ask advice, then blatantly ignore it and tell those who are only trying to help that they are talking complete rubbish and are often rude and in some instances even go out and do the complete opposite then come back and brag about it, or come along and give advice that is sometimes completely against the best interest of the fish, saying they have been doing it this way for years. Whilst it may work for them, it often gives the wrong impression to those who are new to the hobby and willing to learn that its ok to go about looking after fish, their requirements, in the wrong manner. It makes it difficult to get across the points that 9 out of 10 people are trying to get across, when one member is saying the complete opposite and causing arguements, the thread becomes clogged with people arguing back an forth, the original query gets lost and the thread isnt helpful at all.

Least thats what I interpret the thread was originally intended to be about.

Thread = tldr.

However, I would certainly say that some spelling and capital letters and punctuation amongst the masses (new or not) wouldn't be a bad thing. Maybe even some grammar...

I got fed up on here a long while ago when I offered my advice to someone in a fair way and they came back and had a right go at me, despite other members agreeing with me and my advice being correct. I've avoided the forum a lot recently because of the attitudes of others

You know i was waiting for you to reply, and knew how predictable you are with a direct dig, many memebrs on this thread have commented... and it seems only you have gotten personal.. apart from andy (no real suprise there), it says alot.

You also made a second comment just after again just have a dig at 1 commnet directly lol

Immature m8 carry on, but in a sense you have just confirmed the thread and what it stands for all by your self lol, and you call me immature... a comment direct about what you think is what was aksed for but yet again ... and i say yet again becasue you have been warned so many times about it ....you just have to become personal.

And yet he makes the most salient point: this is the internet. It is not real life. To misquote CFC, if what people write on this forum really gets you this upset, how on earth do you cope in real life?

And as others have noted, these threads come up with tedious regularity. I assume one requesting general chat and another for some form of thanking/respect system will soon be posted as well...

Agree 100% Andy, and I only read that post because it was late and I was defending mods. I would type more now but I physically cant having trapped most of my fingers in some chairs causing me unable to use most of them.

It gets annoying, but was this post started because of T1's post and argument last night. That was an epic battle to be remembered.

You have it ine one mags, despite me saying on two occasions and i quote....

To be fair thats not what im was trying to get at lol, the repetative posts about, how do i cycle a tank etc etc? doesnt bother me in the slightest, its the basic advice given and rudely thrown back, many post and threads are going like this and members as said above are starting to leave becasue it

and

I couldnt agree more and again i will say its not the noob questions that this thread was aimed at, i know i dont mind answering the same question over again, this is a forum and its to be expected, i also find it very rewarding to be able to share my experiences with members and them take it with the repect and thanks that a forum is supposed to be about.

i have no problem with answering the same question over again, as quoted above i find it very rewarding as long as the advice not only from me but others is taken..

Ill make it clear, i have no grudges against any mods at all, they do a fantastic job of moderating the forum in general, however it has been said hit the report button if a thread has gone in the way of threatening, abusive and dam right rude... this has been done on these so called threads and not only by me but by other members and this has been said throughout this post, yet the correct protocol has been met and still again as mentioned them threads are still up and running, if we the forums memebers are doing what the mods are asking but then the mods dont follow up on it then what are we to think?. I agree threads as missed and always will be... mods cant be everywhere at once, however the report button reports a particular thread directly to them... no searching or missing it is involved becasue it has been brought to them direct... yet still nothink has been done or the person/s that has been reported has been free to do the same over and over again.. thats what i have a problem with.

I'll disregard andy's comment simply becasue since the time he said he was leaving to never return he has made 2 post that i know of and both post's have basically been a flame and trolling.... so andy before you get on your high horse just think about what you have just said to me and what youve actually done yourself.

Ace, your simply just not worth it.

I know I hate it when people talk in lower case and you can't understand what they said because it made no sence becaus ethey use no grammar at all. I just feel like saying pls dont tlk n txt tlk. In fact I am going to add that to my signature.

Ye know ppl..... some 3hours ago (or is it 2 months), I was some ordinary member on this here forum, & I was as blindfolded as the rest of "us"......

Personal choice, being requested...... I joined the MODS TEAM...... In my wildest dreams, I never realised what is going on behind the scenes.... (backstage)....

Believe me... every rule that is made, is there for good reason, and once such rule is made (for good reason).... it has to be applied - globally...... (no deviation)..... It is ultimately for YOUR protection and to ensure that YOU have the right to talk about YOUR favourite topic......Fish and aquariums.....

Unless the mods keep on being strict and somewhat conservative...... this here forum can get out of hand and become just another facebook or the likes...... Appreciate the extra effort put in by our colleagues......

I cant pm so the thread is http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=298664 Post#8

So 6hrs later the post is still there despite it being report originally some 3/4 days ago, and in replies to Mods on this thread. I cant do anything else about it than press report = Done, and tell Mods directly on this thread.
Or.....is it ok for members to tell other members to shut their mouth?

Thanks Gary for pointing this out..... but, if you go through the whole of the topic,.... there is quite a lot of praise in there as well, and the negatives are all from one source..... by removing this thread due to the (only) negative..... all the "hard work" put in by the OP will not be acknowledged........ and further positive debate is invited by the OP.... some very important issues can be resolved or common ground established if this debate continues. Let's leave it and see what develops.........

(same as it is with this topic....... this is a .... well!!??...... contraversial thread, but it is kept in there cause we are interested to hear from the floor)

i think the stuff that is frustrating people is stuff like this

and i was just helping someone else with stocking questions, and a person in that thread, that has been told their tank is overstocked, replied to the OP telling them their tank isn't overstocked...so stuff like that gets frustrating..and how do you handle it? i didn't want to call the person out, and start a fight over it..but at the same time, you don't want the OP to take their advice.
