Is This Forum Been Ruined By Imature New Users?

The limitations of the report system have been covered; the forum software does have an upgrade that just came out. This should include a message center visible to all mods, not just the forum leaders. If it is of major concern feel free to pm a few of the mods besides using the report function.

You have to step into the shoes of a new aquarist to get a feel for where they are coming from & why. How many times have wee seen a new member/aquarist sign up here, telling us what there local shop has told them, which often is slightly to 100% wrong.

They have just invested their time, money and faith in the shop’s expertise, to be told by members here it’s all wrong. They have talked face to face with these people who sold them this gear, and may be on a first name basis. They come here, to faceless individuals with self appointed names, who inform them that the shop, who is thought to be a professional outfit since they make a living doing it, has sold them into a situation that at the least will take a lot more work, cost more money, have a steep learning curve with the end result of not listening to our amateur advice being failure.

You know what they are thinking? We are all nuts! I can’t think of a single member here who does this as their main source of income, and supports themselves financially doing so. The shop that sold them the gear, gave them the advice, and seemed outwards friendly does so.

You should expect skepticism; disbelief, perhaps feeling a bit upset that they may have been misled, and their replies may show this. Depending on their temperament, they may well tell us we are nuts, they are going to listen to the ”pros”, and given the situation you can hardly blame them. They are seeing this from a total opposite direction that many of us are used to seeing this hobby from. To them it may not even be a hobby; it may be a household decoration, a little gift for a kid, a glorified night-light, hard to say.

If you think yourself the more experience aquarist, as well as forum member you have to take human nature into consideration when dealing with a new and possibly upset member. The ability to do so will show that you are the more experienced aquarist, and will have a better likelihood of getting the results you desire.

I'm a noob, and i'm hope i'm not bothering you guys too much, but i'm going to stand up for my part of the population.

for one, this site can be really difficult to figure out at first. I was completely new to forums so didn't know many of the popular words...heck i still don't know the difference between topic and thread...but anyways, this whole thing can take quite a while to get used to.

Also, you are all right that there is a ton of info already on the site that us noobs should find. However, idk about you guys, but i really think the search option on this site is not all it's cracked up to be..i mean type in the name of a fish, search for it, and tell me how far down the page the species index page shows up. I just searched for guppy and the first thing to come up is "pin me pin me". Idk what kind of free time some of you guys have, but it can take hours to search through this forum to find someone with the same question as you, or relevant topic, and then to also read all the available information, plus take figure out how to apply it to your situation.

It is so much easier to just post your question, even if it is simple, and get a response that is specific to your situation.

So I agree, some people really do ask simple questions. but i remember when i started here i had no idea that there was "pinned" topics that would answer most my questions.

maybe this isn't the type of noob stuff you guys are talking about. but take it easy on some of us. and if it's a simple question, just give the simple answer and go about your business, we really appreciate it.

but i really think the search option on this site is not all it's cracked up to be..

Yeah I agree with you, but I don't think any other forums search engines are much different, I just don't think any of them work all that well...

I think what some people are frustrated about people who aren't appreciative about information given to them, using the information and a simple thank you should suffice (not saying you don't do this!) Although I don't think it is all new users and I am sure this has happened many times and not just recently.

I think it's posts like this that are ticking people off (and that ticked me off too hence my nasty reply lol.) But this may have to do with one specific thread...

You think that's something new on any forum?

We average 25 new members every day, 120 new topics every day, and 1200 new posts every day. You are pointing out one member out of over 5,000 who have joined since that member joined. I will agree that the member you linked to won't go far in life with that attitude, but the percentage of members who post in that manner is actually quite small.

IMO we should just simply ignore people that dont want to be helped, or that have a poor attitude.
And help out the people that do want advise, such as myself and many others.
No matter what you do in life - you will always get people like this.
So I think everyone should just simply ignore them and carry on as they normally do.

My opinions of you are immature, but I do not go around making threads about it. If you do not like people, avoid them. You are behind a computer you don't need to reply to their threads, or even talk to them.

But you forget:

I class myself as a noob and having just caught up with this topic again after yesterday

I have to say that i have taken 99% of advice given and found this a vary usefull forum re fishkeeping

All advice has been taken and only on 1 occasion did i get flamed , not from a mod but from another member, a mod then defended me.

I am guilty of going through the posts looking for stuff but to learn and read see some of the tanks as some are truely amazing.I have occasionally given advice but only on basic stuff anf suggested that people wait for a more experienced person to reply

I say keep the forum as its an invaluable tool for me and many others

if people are constant in the buse of the forum and or others ban them and put an appeal process in place

sorry but i use this forum loads and i think its one of the best out there :good:

It's not the asking for advice on similar topics that is a problem, it is the number of noobs who ask and then completely disregard the advice given - and then ask again and again until one person says what they want to hear.

Noobs are always welcome - weren't we all new once? It's the small percentage of people who are down right ignorant that are frustrating people.

I agree with most of the comments
advice is just what it is advice!! its your choice whether to take it or not
however most established members are very knowlegable and are giving advice to ensure out little fishes have good welfare and ensure we dont kill off everthing in our tanks

If anyone does not want to take advice given on the forum that is there choice but imo this will cost you money and cause some distress to the fish.

not sure how we can resolve any issues re flaming etc without turning mods into the gestapo

YF makes a valid point and at the risk of being rude ignore the immature comments and get on with what we love
Fishkeeping! as In some cases we have a new generation of fishkeepers that are keen to learn and keep our little friends in a safe enviroment.

I have to agree with what's said above [well apart from some of the spelling  ]

You're going to get 'noob syndrome' on any forum, and as tedious as it is, either reply or ignore!!! Simples!
I'm gaining confidence with my fishes, all due to hours of reading on this forum and if I offer advice I will generally just post a link to somewhere that I have read it before! Mind you I do love a bit of research, for me it's half the fun of the 'hobby'.

One other thing.....IMO this forum is extremely well moderated, I belong to forums that you will wait days for an abusive post to be removed [them Great Dane owners can be nasty....believe me  ].

Jenclibee, you know my feelings on this ;) as do several other members. It seems its ok for these 'new' members to even 'abuse' the members who are trying to help them, even going so far as to post things intentionally to get a rise from certain members, using their 'name' in the posts, all ignored by the Mods, but the instant the 'older' member retailiates, hey presto, they get a warning, a ban, etc, whilst the 'new' member merrily carries on. Yes, we can choose to ignore them, dont have to read the posts etc, but it becomes difficult when they are posting 100 x a day the same cr*p over and over. Nuff said. :D
