Is Ro Water Really Necessary?

I must say i agreewith you Chac.
I live in a rural area with lots of farming. Our water quality is excellant but i simply cannot take the risk when i know that farmers use all sorts of chemicals in their fields, these run off into streams etc and eventually into the water supply. Whilst i know that the water authority should make it perfectly drinkable for humans, "drinkable" is one things. "Livable" is another. :*)

Rainwater is far too soft for marines, its pH lies around 5.0. or even less. In a non-city area, it is chemically pure and can be used in softwater FW tanks. In a city, the rain may be polluted, causing devilish "acid rain", that is so acidic that it can peel the paint off cars. pH?: can be as low as 2.0, resulting in major damage for even mammals to drink. Summary: i wouldnt use rainwater. If you can find a way to make the water more alkaline, fly right at it

Also, i would not be too worried about RO water. Unless you wont allow for risks.

I would go the other way from Lynden & say for the small cost of an RO unit they are well worth it

Have a look here for RO Units Ro-Man

(Sorry dont know an US sites)

an RO unit costs less than some fish! i cant see why anyone would not use RO.....puuting chemicals in your tank that the water company see fit to add their end seems like a bad plan?

Ro + Salt (and all the other stuff in there) + trace element addatives is surley a better bet?

RO water here is around $40 for 10 L.... i will not pay that, not in this life time.

Bloody hell that is extortionate, think your LFS is taking the mik

My LFS charges around £2.50 per 5g

:grr: :grr: :grr:

In the UK you can buy a good ro unit for £75, is the US probably even less, its much cheaper in the long run to buy one than keep buying from lfs at £4 a per 25l which only lasts a week for top ups.

Imo id only not use ro water if I lived by a clean stretch of coast, i would use seawater or if i had well water i may use that but I would want to get it tested first, I believe TMC have their own well and use well water.

If you are on a meter then having your own RO unit can cost as for every 1 gallon you get, it wastes 3. With a big tank that will soon add up.

A lot of window cleaners now have large (like 500 gpd) RO units. Get sweet with one of them and you may find you can have free RO water.

You can always save the waste water: it will have been through a sediment and carbon filter, and any other impurities will only be at 4/3 the original concentration.
