As far as shell dwellers, you could do a pair of N. Multifasciatus if you got the lake cichlid water hardener. They do frequently a lot though, in my experience. I have had a continuous colony for several years and they are fun. They much prefer length over depth, though, so the top half of the tank would be mostly ignored by them, ad they couldn't handle tank mates there.
Sounds like my footprint may not be ideal for something like that but I'll do some research 👍

Took a trip to my LFS to have a look at some of the fish I "like". The dwarf pea puffers they had in were absolutely adorable but my goodness they were so much smaller than I'd realised! I didn't feel at all confident I'd be able to feed them or avoid siphoning them up at that size, or whether I'd even see them at all! They are definitely off the list. Perhaps one day, but not today.

They had a lot of different bettas in but I noticed a lot of the long-fin ones weren't in as great condition as the previous one I bought from there, and I didn't really like any of the shorter fin ones - nothing wrong with them at all, it was definitely a "me" issue! They had some nice chunky females but none of them grabbed me.

I did like the scarlet badis so am going to do some more research on those. In the meantime I've got some mystery snails and panda bee shrimp, and stocked up on some aponogetum crispus bulbs and elodea.

While I was walking around a felt something on my foot, looked down and there was a fish there that had escaped its tank. The LFS guy caught it, I think it was a betta antuta, so at least having it land on me helped save it.

Be careful with mystery snails. Mine completely ignored anything I gave them and they went always back to destroying my live plants.

I've never had that problem with mystery snails, mine just don't live that long (about 6 months).
