How do you dispose of your fish?

The Sharp hard blow to the head area is my way for Fish who are suffering. I live with bad choices or get them a new home somewhere. Never flush health fish its ***** and makes me *****. OK.

I recently read in a book the humane way to kill a fish is to remove it from the tank, place it on a board and quickly sever the head from the spine with a sharp Knife.

Flushing fish down the toilet is not only inhumane it's immoral!

I would not even consider this for terminally sick fish!

I don't see how anyone who could do this to a fish could consider themselves part of this hobby.

Being knowledgable about how to keep fish and aquaria is obviously very different from 'caring' for your fish.

BTW - I prefer to use the short sharp blow when necessary.

Slowly cooling the fish, by turning off the heater and then placing the fish in a bag of water in the fridge, is probably humane, albeit slow. It causes the fish to gradually go into hypothermic sleep, without frostbite. Once the fish is asleep, freezing to death is not cruel, as far as the vet believes

Well, i have to say that i do not agree with this. You never should terminate fish in freezer. Fish are cold-blooded and someone has told that fish simply go asleep, this is wrong. Why? Because water where the fish are living doesn't change fast, so in too cold water fish is "showing" signs of illness and if there is a quite big fish, you have to keep it in several hours in cold water!

Fish are suffering all the time, untill ice-crystals will appear on the fish skin and starting to destroy cells and tissue!!

Alhough many people defend this method comparing it to human painless freezing. It's not the same thing at all.

What would you choose as your method to destroy a sick fish?
You must assume that many of us are not able to simply purchase drugs over the counter in the U.K. Most of my colleagues are not microbiologists, they are simply hobbyists that are enthuastic about their hobby.

Any runts or sick dying fish in my care go straight into Oscars tank or with the Clown Knifefish as this is quick natural and hopefully painless as the "feeder" fish is sucked in whole and its just "lights out" for the unfortunate fish :what: .

However what i DO NOT condone is the "flushing" of a perfectly healthy fish by a ruthless impatient and unknowledgable keeper (see micheal) people who practise this sort of fish keeping should be banned from keeping fish for LIFE!!!!!!!!! :hmm:

As for diseased fish...............not lost one yet to disease as i always get the appropriate medication as soon as there are any signs of an outbreak (see intestinal worms post etc etc) ;)

Sorry, did i understand it right: You put your fish into another tank that fish is eaten?

IF i understood it right, have you ever tought about consequences? If the fish is sick, other fish are danger to get that disease too. (Like most fish are carrying tuberculosis and how do you know that your sick fish hasn't fish-tuberculous)

I don't know about you, but here where i live, it's simply prohibited to feed animal with living animal, including fish too.

The best method is to use scissor or sharp knife.

And it's even harder to get any drugs in Finland. I have none, because i haven't found any friendly vet who would write prescription for MS222 or benzocaine. When you put right proportion, fish "goes asleep" and when you add more enough fish dies.

I wouldn't use any other chemical like CO2 (this is not good method) or alcohol (fish will suffer - try yourself to trink strong alcohol or put it in cut), or hot water (their is several case that fish has jumped out of pot and skin was "hatched out"), hot water only small fish like neontetra.

You have to always remember: When you take pet, you have to prepare yourself that someday you may have to put it down. If you can not do it yourself, call your friend or aquarium-shops, they can!

mrV I see what you mean about possibly having to put down a pet but you wouldn't euthanize a beloved pet dog by cutting its head off yourself would you?

is this a humane way get a sharp knife and slice it in the neck

To answer your question-
Where did you dig this from? I thought this subject was long gone and buried (forgive the pun)
I think from reading from my learned colleagues, the surest and most humane way to destroy a fish is to behead it. QUICKLY!!!
