Horrible Lfs Experience

I just came back from the only LFS in a 60 mile radius.   They sell birds and rodents as well.   The odor was so strong i smelled it outside.   Very unhappy chinchillas and rabbits.   Dead fish.....I won't be back. 
 
I asked their fish guy loads of questions, including things I already knew.   He told me that ghost shrimp lay eggs in the water, and that the water current would slam them into the glass and kill them.  He also said that a Discus would be a good addition.   (While that is exactly what I want---a big blue show fish, I know it is not a smart idea at ALL) 
 
I went back to Petsmart.   Sadly, the FishGuy there is the best option I have for on the spot advice.   He actually seems to know what he's doing.  Even plants....he admits he isn't the best with live plants, but that his wife is amazing. There are several fish I'm interested in having, and can't buy from the box stores, and I wont' go back to the LFS.   So what online resource is the best?

Aquabid, wetspottropicalfish, bobstropicalplants, liveaquaria are a few.
 
Big blue fish..what about a gourami?
 
I'm sure you already know you can ask as many questions as you like around here, so may want to post in the planted section for some help on plants.

Husband wants a nice sized school of neons.......12 or more.   Won't the Gourami have issues with them?  Because i was drooling over one online
