I have a 2.5 gal perfecto aquarium that needs to be heated. Right now I have a flat piece of glass that doesn't fit because the heater sticks out of the top. Perfecto doesn't make hoods that small.

I have to have a lid of some sort (I have a really fat cat.) Any ideas???

I had a thin sheet of acrylic or something in the house... I have no idea what it was for, but I ended up cutting a piece out of it that would work as a cover for my 2.5 gallon tank.

I just drew the lines on it with a marker and scored it with an exacto knife (had to be 10-15 cuts on each side just to make a good dent in it) then broke the piece off on the edge of a table to make sure it didn't crack. Kinda like how people cut out stained glass pieces.

I don't know if that would work for you or not... you could cut the corner off for the heater. The piece I cut out is so light a cat would very easily pull it off if they were so inclined though... much lighter than glass. There may be thicker acrylic available.

That probably wasn't helpful at all. :)

Find someone with a glass cutter and snip the cover's corner off?

Do you have a picture available of your 2.5g?

Here's a pic of how my 2.5g used to look. I used a 12" flourescent light over the glass lid for heat and it worked pretty well, even though it only got as warm as 78F. It's now an undivided, palm-filtered midget catfish tank (3 cories and an oto). :)

I didn't have a picture of it, but that's what digital cameras are for:

You'll have to excuse the hornwort... it's having acclimation issues. And the messiness. And that's the female tank behind it.

I don't use the acrylic cover anymore because I ended up buying a glass one... hopefully that's not what you wanted to see (though I don't know why you'd need to see a rectangle of acrylic :)).

What's the divider made from? I wanted to cut the glass panel to make room for the HOB palm filter, but I guess the cover is too small to cut.

I just came back from Home Depot where I had Thomas cut me a piece of acrylic for $1.89. He spent about half an hour cutting it with his exacto knife. We had a very interesting conversation about his ex-girlfriend . . .

So thank you Endparenthesis, it totally worked! :D

I asked them if they would be able to cut a corner off my glass lid and he said he didn't want to risk breaking it. Same thing with Michael's Craft Store, although they cut some glass for dividers for me yesterday.

Well hopefully after all that work someone won't chime in now with a much faster and easier solution :). I just did the first free thing I could think of.
