Honduran Red Points Cichlids Breeding - Free Swimming Fry :)

Fingers crossed here too, chances are once the female get the feeling they may eat the fry.

Are the HRP like Convicts, but a different colouration? I've heard them called blue convicts before I think.

Sort of yeah, HRP are referred to as blue convict but I think a blue convict is actually a convict x HRP cross, they all belong to the same sub-species

Having never owned a standard convict I couldn't say whether HRP are more or less agressive etc, I do know the male HRP I have when in the main tank dominates it, but no cichlid in there is bigger than him yet...

I like them :) We got a baby Con yesterday (Burt). He's really cute, keeps himself to himself and is always busy picking about for food :) He is the smallest in the tank by far though

I think he should be able to hold his own though :) They really are a tough and interesting cichlid...the breeding colours on my male HRP are amazing when he turns it on and he has this stubbornness about him until the female gives him what for

Yup, he's cool :) I wanted something that would give back what it was given, but otherwise mind its own business. No one takes any notice of Burt, he just goes around. It's funny watching him swim across the tank, the flow is good in the tank and he is tiny so he doesn't put much effort in, just drifts

The bloke in the fish shop started on about them being easy to breed - I said I only wanted one

I've now got 100 lol

Easy isn't the word, whilst the male was bagged in the tank to be released, the female was flirting with him, by the time the male was let out he changed colours within 5 minutes and they were courting :)
one week later or so and I had swimming fry

Blimey - that's quick

A couple of half decent pics of fry today:

I am about to give both tanks a good clean btw, I've been working away :)

Wow fantastic pics, love the second one with the full belly

Well what you guys predicted has started happening! The male started eating the fry, I've seen atleast 4 on the trot he has munched on but I think it is more like 20 or so, so far (there are lots in there and it's hard to judge just how many)......

edit: Mr HRP has now been bagged and put in the other tank now, fry and mum are left in peace :)
A new war is probably going to break out in the main tank though with his inclusion, between the Firemouth, HRP, Port Acara and biggest Tapajos, with heirachy in that order I reckon with the HRP slotting into second place...

awesome photos its hard to get good photos of Fry. They look great good job you much be proud. How old are they now?

Thanks. I am really happy with them, they're doing great. It's funny watching them feed, if I put big flakes on the surface they pull and tug them down and the way they feed is very predatory looking with swipes at any food :) Blood worm are wrestled to death (frozen ones

)

I would have expected them to grow a little faster though...some are starting to look more like a proper fish and have markings starting to show very faintly (tail and fins) and others are still very small. I think they're around 5-6 weeks old...

When should I expect them to reach the stage when they look proper juvis (1") like in the LFS?

You may fine now you have removed dad, mum may start baby munching within the next few days as she may be ready to breed again. My cons took about 10-12 weeks to reach 1" size.
