Hole in tail fin

Ok thanks so much for helping! I know you're trying. I just feel bad over this. I removed any plastic plants I think will hurt him. He doesn't have sharp gravel but river stones. I think it is an injury and not fin rot as well.

I don't think I will use medication but I would like to try almond leaves. Can I get this at my pet shop or do I have to go to an Aquarium shop?

We all get frustatded don't worry. You just can't take it out on people who are trying to help. Almonds leaves can be found on almond trees or you can buy some from Amazon. Though you could just go look for some instead of buying. Aquarium stores don't have almond leaves.

The good news is injuries like this almost always heal on their own just like when you cut your finger. Poor conditions prevent the healing or can lead to infection which is why we change the water daily till it's all cleared up.

Just fwiw strips are fine. I always test one out of the new pack against an old one to make sure they are consistent. Then I cut them in half length ways so I have twice as many as I paid for.

Well he is a little adventurous and tries to squeeze through anything he can do I guess it was bound to happen. It's like he has attention deficit disorder and has to get into everything.

I will be picking up some Indian Almond leaves tomorrow to help him heal. I also read they are good for the water as well.

Ok also upon further inspection I noticed he has white scales under his chin behind his "beard" like a little patch of them. Is this a fungus? They appear no where else on him. He's not lethargic and in fact he's quite the opposite and never rests except for a few seconds at a time.

Yay congrats! As for the white spot is it fuzzy? Does it look like cotton? They could just be his natural colors showing.

After looking at other photos of similar Betta's I think it's natural since they all seem to have this similar patch. I guess I am being paranoid.

Anyhow he's swimming around fine checking out stuff in his tank as usual. He's probably wondering why the scenery change. I took out all the plastic plants except one small one that he's had since I got him. Now he has just a moss ball some water sprite that's tied to rocks with thread and one fake but real looking hiding log. I am getting more real plants soon for him to swim and hide in...poor guy.

Sarah is right. I think she was just trying to help you figure out what caused the hole in order to prevent it again. Good, clean water is all you need. Silk plants are usually safe too.

Hi

You have a long fin Betta and from time to time he will damage his tail its normal dont panic, Make sure he has lots of clean treated water, remove any objects that dont pass the stocking test.

Grab a pair of nylon stockings, drape them over the ornament or plastic plant and gently slide the stockings over the object or plant, if they catch on anything so will the Bettas tail.

Thanks I removed all his plastic plants just in case. He has one ornament which is a fake petrified log that he hides in.
I know his long fins can get caught in stuff... I was just worried he was sick. I am glad he can recover from it with care.

Bettas do not need logs or want logs on the bottom of a tank to hide in, what they need is floating plants, things like Riccia and Water sprite are great for this, They use it to build bubble nests and to sleep in. Also floating an Indian almond leaf is great.

This is a natural way for a Betta to sleep, I snuk up on him one night and used a flash to take that,

Right next to where he sleeps is an indian almond leaf with a huge bubble nest

He has water sprite also at the surface that he can chill in if he wants. He also has a moss ball he sits on. Sometimes he attacks it. Still...he likes to swim in and out of his log. Sometimes he sits inside with just his nose sticking out. I had always thought they liked to have at least one place to hide. My other Betta "Miles" absolutely loves his Pagoda ornament and swims in and out of it all the time. Hes in it now as I type this. He has real plants though including water sprite that he sleeps in.

I got one of those resin logs and used a bit of stainless steel wire to hang it near the top, if you think he likes it on the bottom try my trick.

That's really neat! I was thinking of using a rock tall and flat enough to mount the log close to the surface. I could also get him a floating log too.
