Hi guys, got given a guppy for my birthday and have very little knowledge on how to be a good fish mum so joining this forum to learn as I go

Become very attached in a very short space of time lol.

Most important thing you can do for your guppy is regular water changes and getting it some friends if possible, guppies are very social. Just make sure the tank is big enough first, the general rule is 1 inch of fish / gallon of water.

Hi! Welcome to the forum :)

What size tank do you have this fish in?

And was your tank cycled before you put the fish in? If you don’t know what this means please ask :)

Hey! Thank you!
I have a 5 gallon tank and haha you're right I'm not too sure what that means.. do you mean is the water like "semi-clean" but not completely fresh water before putting them in?

Cycling means growing 2 colonies of good bacteria which 'eat' poisonous fish waste. It does take a few weeks and during that time any ammonia or nitrite in the water will harm fish. But just one fish in 5 gallons means there won't be very much waste, though you do need to do regular water changes to stop that small amount building up to a big amount.
The first part of this link explains things fully, though the second half is for growing these bacteria before any fish are put in the tank so ignore that bit.
