Help With My Fish Tank

Hi TFF.

I am starting to get a little bit annoyed and frustrated with the current situation of my fish tank. Despite doing a 100% water change on more than one occasion, buying a new filter (Fluval U4), cleaning the gravel (by hand), removing miscellanious items in the tank such as white pebbles and live plants. Despite doing these changes to the tank, the water keeps going cloudy after around 4-5 days. There also appears to be an oily-like film on the surface of the water. I have ran out of ideas to try and rectify this problem. Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Yes it has been fully cycled for around 4-5months. I have 11 fish in my 95 litre. The fish are small, it's mainly guppies, types of tetra, and a betta, and a few cories as well

Hmmm, Im presuming that you've done a gravel vac etc. to ensure there is not mass amounts of waste and rotting food? I'm sure someone else can help out, but my head is a little sore right now and I cant think of anything else at this moment in time. God #41#### new year

There are actually certain things that you can get to put into the water to remove the cloudiness. Once the water in my tank became very cloudy but all I had to do was change the filter media and rinse the gravel, which you did, so I can't see why you'd have any problems anymore... maybe it's something to do with what you're feeding them. So what are you feeding them?

I feed them flake food in the morning, and around 5-6pm I feed them spectrum thera pellets and a plexo wafer. Every so often I will replace the pellets with frozen bloodworm or another form of frozen food.

Try a period of feeding them only a small amount of flake in the morning. If that clears things up you could also try adding those other wafer things back in one at a time to see if one or the other is the culprit.

This is probably not an issue but we always like to ask: Are you using a good liquid-reagent based test kit to take your NH3, NO2, NO3 and pH measurements? In any cloudy situation its always good to give us numbers on those for a little review, just to be sure.

I usually go to my lfs to get the water tested. I will try adding less food, and I will update this shortly with the figures from my next water test. Thanks

If you are able to make it happen, doing your own testing is safer. While there are stores that will use a good kit and do excellent readings for you, giving you the results in numbers, there are many more places where the person will either be careless, will not actually know how to perform the test properly or will not give you numbers but just say its ok, which is an opinion, not a result.

Thanks, the cloudiness is getting worse and frankly I have no idea whatsoever what to do next. I really need some help with this as I fear it could be affecting my fish.

Hi Noor. I am unable to tell at this moment in time as I have just done another 100% water change. I keep having to do a 100% every week as the cloudiness get very bad within a week. I will update this by the end of the week to let you all know if it has went cloudy again. To be honest I say it will definitely be cloudy again as it has done previously.

Does the water have a green tint to it? I would really suggest getting your own test kit or at least have your water tested.

No it doesn't have a green tint. It is more of a White tint. I'll try and get a testing kit as soon as possible to help you further.

Is it just me or is this just an obvious case of new tank syndrome?

The cleaning and water changes would back this up as tbh they sound more than excessive, a 100% water change fixes nothing tbh and there isn't really a situation when this is required. When you added the Fluval filter did the existing one remain in the tank?
