Hello

Tank sizes are for adult fish rather than groups - the example you gave means Zebra Danios as a species can be kept in a 10 gallon minimum and they should be kept in groups of at least 6. However... Zebra Danios are often cited as a beginner fish which is why the small tank sizes are often recommended. And based purely on their adult size a 10 gallon should be ok but when you factor in activity levels, its not, they will survive in there but will only thrive in a longer tank because of how active they are. Zebra and Leopard Danios are actually the same species Danio Rerio so they will school together just bred for different markings.

One thing we have not really addressed is that you are over stocked right now too, have you heard of inch per gallon? Its a very rough guide to work out your stocking levels, it is flawed and there is wiggle room depending on species but its a useful starting point. At the moment you have 7 2 inch fish and 1 5 inch fish (though I know you know about the CAE) which puts you at 19 inches in a 6 gallon tank - or without the CAE you are at 14 inches. With the nano species I mentioned that get a little under an inch a school of 6 would put you at fully stocked and you'd be keeping a fish that will do ok in a smaller tank. A few other options would be a trio of Badis - Black Tiger Badis are very cool, or a few male Endlers or a couple of species of Rabora might be ok like Emerald or Galaxy.

Unheated tanks in the UK are generally not a great idea as over winter we get into negative figures. Just think how cold it gets on a night and most people don't have heating on over night as you are tucked up in bed, especially this year with the prices. Would a small heater not be an option? You can get small ones for £10?

I was going to try to get a heater towards the end of the year, but during the winter the heating is on quite a bit. Aren't badis very territorial, I do like the scarlet badis but if I was to get any I would only get 1 though. Could you keep killifish or ricefish in a 6.5 gallon tank?

Do you think I should go for a full platy tank. I do like them and I could have a school of 5 to 6 if I get the dwarf ones

I had no idea there was such a thing as a dwarf platy 😳

Teacup I think, I do currently have a platy that's about an inch and I think it has reached its adult size.

1 male 2 females with the Badis would be ok in here, I'd avoid the bigger species though like the Blues. They are territorial but if you scape the tank well shouldnt be an issue, you may find they lurk most of the time though rather than open water swimming like a school.

Dwarf platies are a thing, but I've never seen them in the UK its more of a US thing. Aquarium Co-Op are quite big on them. I wouldn't assume a fish bought as a regular platy is a dwarf though they have the potential to grow and unless all males breed...

Clown Killifish could be an option but as a surface dweller not sure I'd stock a tank just with them, I'd go for them in a bigger tank with other fish at different levels. Ricefish I think get too big and could do better in a 60cm tank.

Do you know if you have soft or hard water? Thats usually a good place to start.

I have had the platy for 2 months and it hasn't grown, my water was slightly hard but then I added tannins to my water so it is softer now, the tannins are starting to go away now

Hi Tom,
Welcome to TFF... :hi:
I won't go into detail for there are already enough people who marked down some pointers that you can keep an eye on. Hope you'll work your thoughts on that. We're all here to learn...
