I'm just setting up my fish tank now, so I'm glad to have found this forum. Freshwater tank, 55 gal.

I hear that I shouldn't put it next to the window because the sun causes algae. Is this true? Also, it gets cold up here in Nebraska and near the window might be too cold.

Anyway, glad to be here. I'll post pics when I have it set up.

Hi Tom, welcome! Algae is caused by a number of factors, but excess light is a big one. If your tank is near a window, this can certainly encourage it. Like you said, it is also easier to maintain a constant temperature without major fluctuations if your tank is away from windows. Extreme heat is an issue here in Australia for me, as I'm sure freezing cold is for you in Nebraska :) - so all three of my tanks are out of direct sunlight from windows.

Welcome!
What kind of fish are you going for? Sunlight will likely cause algae growth, but if you're going to have very many algae eaters it won't be a problem. I have a tank in a south facing window that gets all kinds of sunlight. One common pleco takes care of most of the algae, and we still have to feed him additional wafers.
