This is the second time I have cleaned out my Fluval Filter and had it smothered with snails....baby ones mostly, but some decent sized ones too. Every month or so my output will start to trickle instead of rush like it's suppose to. I don't think I'm suppose to have to clean out the inside of my filter and media as often as once a month do you guys?????
Anyhow.....I'm sure it's because of all the D@M snails. I have been too nice until now, just letting them overpopulate my tank and now I'm DONE!!!!!!! I need to get rid of them....ALL OF THEM!!! :grr: :grr:  :S But I DON'T want to hurt my fish at all. Is there something out there that works.....your help is much needed.

Please Help Me

Clown loaches are great as are many of the botia species

Or you could try a trap - which is bated with some food last thing at night and removed in the morning (hopefully full of snails :/ )

Though with them infesting the filter itself I think you may find it a bit trickier. Apparently they don't grow as big in a filter :/ but love it as they are safe from predators and have a ready supply of food brought to them - I think the only way is to regularly clean them out manually (maybe more often ;) )

....or go down the chemical route :X :/

:)

I would put something like a pantyhose sock over the intake of your filter. Then put a few clown loaches in the tank. That should solve it for ya

I read somewhere about adding coins into your tank to kill them. Dunno how it works, but im sure someone else will :)

Ironically i went to the fish shop to scrounge some of those small snails off them :) For my daphnia tank. Cute little buggers some of them :)

AWW I want some of your snails. Its sods law, when someone wants them he can't get them and those who don't want the are infested in them. My puffers would love your tank.

If you get a clown loach he would always have a supply of nice snails and im sure he would keep the population down so they dont overun the tank.

Banjo catfish are far better snail eaters than clown loaches IMO or if you want something a "little" larger a Megladoras irwini (my latest new fish :D ),but since you dont like "ugly" fish theyll be no good to you silver :p

Nothing you can do about snails in the filter, just clean them out when you clean the filter every other month,if you cant get snail eaters then trapping is the best method.

I thought salt only killed slugs?
If you can get them off the filter do the trap or fish thing. Let Mother Nature take its' course. :D

Valerie
Salt might work as snails and slugs are closely related.

CatFish, do you have any pictures of the two fish you mentioned!???

And NO, I don't REALLY care if they are ugly  Well, at least not too ugly!!!! :p

I think that is what I will have to do. I was told my tank wasn't big enough for a clown loach and don't you have to get a small school of clowns?? But soon I will only have my 4 Dollars and 2 Black Angels in the 55 gallon and that's the one with the snails so maybe then I could get loaches??? But in the mean time.......if you could post some pictures of those catfish guys you mentioned CatFish that would be REALLY appreciated!!

Okay CatFish.......I just went to PlanetCatfish and looked at the Banjo and all I can say is simply:

NO WAY!!!!!! EEK!!!!!!

I wouldn't even be able to put my hands in the tank anymore   :hyper:

Would one of those guys even be okay with other fish??? They look so SCARY :alien: :/ ;)

I'm going to go look at the other one now!!!

Okay....I'm back..............EEEeeeeeewwww!!! Sorry CatFish, but I really admire you now that I know what you keep. I'm sorry but I just can't have something like that in my tanks. They would freak me out WAY to much!!!

Can you suggest something not so prehistoric looking and not so big that still chows on the snails real good!????

PLEEEEEASE CATFISH!! :*)

The Megladoras i suggested will get WAY too big for your tank, they will grow to 24"!
Ill dig up a couple of pics of the banjo cats and stick em in members pics for ya.

OH new post appeared while i was typing, whats wrong with the banjos? :-( Theyre completely harmless and so dopey you can pick them up with your hand. They only get to about 5" so they couldnt harm your fish.

Any of the doradid catfish will eat snails, some better than others but most of these look prehistoric too. With the snail eating cats a no no the only thing i suggest would be some of the botia species (loaches),these will need to be kept in groups and some species can be aggressive.

So what you are saying is that the Banjo would be the way to go for me......kind of saying!!! ;) Well, if they only get about 5" or so I guess I could try one. I just have this thing with scary looking fish and my hands  Call me a weenie, but I can't help it, but I NEED SOMETHING NOW for my darn snails. I didn't sign on to the Fish Bandwagon to have a "Snail Tank" so I am becoming a Snail-terminator 8) !!

I will check and see if my LFS carries or can order a Banjo. Oh and CatFish, how big of snails can they eat or do they just eat babies?? And it for sure won't eat other fish right?

Thank You
