ok in my ten gal tank my sarassa commet and shubunkin goldfish arent doing well. i treated with maracyn 2 for septicema(on the sarasa) and there was no change good or bad so i stopped. now it suddenly got worse and i dont think the sarasa will make it. now my shubunkin looks like he has swim bladder bladder problems. dorsal fin is clamped and sometime the other fins are too. he sits near the bottom and his nose goes down and hits the gravel then he tries to right himself over and over.

water stats: 0-20 nitrate
0 nitrate
gh 75
kh 80-120
ph around 7.8

i dont have ammonia test so i will go tomorrow to my lfs and have it tested. i also used stripps so it isnt the most acurate

the only thing i did from unusaul is a 50% partial or so(didnt keep track of the exact amount) and moved stuff around. was this what caused this. i see nothing else wrong. dont worry about the sarasa as im sure the meds will just stress him out and kill him faster. what do i do for my shubunkin. if he does have swim bladder i herd that peas help. how do i prepare them and feed them to him. also do i use fresh canned or frozen. plz hurry

1/4 water chg and no feeding for 3 days...Not alot for swim bladder...Id write em off. Dont dump a bunch of crap in the tank...if the fish is strong, he might make it, if not...well..you tried.

thanks. does anyone else have info. http://badmanstropicalfish.com/disease.html

based on the info here ^ i bielve i should do a small partial. feed peas. and then fast my fish for a while. is this correct?

i should have mentioned that fri i fed small pellets, sat finnly choped fresh zucinini and today flakes.i only feed once a day. i also have some appongeton in the tank which they have been nibbling on the leaves and the roots(after diging away some of the gravel)

also how exactly do i prepare the peas? does it matter weather i use frozen, fresh or canned?

edit: i just read that i should add aquarium salt. is this correct?

aaaaaaaarrrrrggggggggghhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :grr:

its worse than i though. his eyes appear to be bulging a bit and kinda role when he moves. and i just saw him flick against the gravel 4 times in a row. and on the end of his body where the tail starts part of it is white and looks like some scales are missing.

im afraid i might lose both of my last goldfish :-( :X :-( -_-  ???? so many emotion going on.....i dont know what to do...............................

That ten gal is not ideal for them both as they are big waste producers, swim bladder hard to treat if it has progressed shelled peas and daphnia, try some epson salt baths as well, swim bladder can be due to many dried foods in there diet, so what do you feed the fish, if the eyes are bulging out you have pop eye, to be honest the deseases are mounting up and not sounding good.

i know the 10 gal isnt suitable. i was planning on getting them a 29gal(which is will more than likely be a deffinent if they live now that i finnally found a job). i feed them a varity of flakes and pellets along with the occasional blood worms, brine shrimp and zucinini.

i know it doesnt look good and i cant figure out what happened. it all started when one of my shubunkins died mysteriously a while ago and i went and out and bought the sarasa, which i have now learned that the tank was over stalked. they were all doing fine for a long time. originaly i started with 2 fantails. one died the next day. the other did great and about a year later i decided to get him a friend which was another fantail. then around april/may this year i saw the shubunkins and got 2. then a few months later one shubunkin died mysteriously and i rushed out to buy a srasa. and you know the rest already.

i have just done a 20% partial. tomorrow i will get some frozen peas. how should i prepare them.....just thaw them and drop it in or what, and how much do i feed. after that should i just stop feeding them for a few days?

the shubunkins eyes(both of them) look like they have been pushed out. is this really pop eye. i searched a little but couldnt find a decent pic.

i have read on several sites that swim bladder and pop eye can both be caused by bacterial infections. is this true? if so can medicated food help at all?

i read that i can use Maracyn to treat pop eye. would i use maracyn 1 or 2?

about the epsom salt baths: how do i do that? would aquarium salt work too?

sorry for the long @%# post i just want to make sure what i need to do for my goldfish. thanks for the help.

Id go with a dose of Furazone Green...then a 1/4 water chg after 2 days..repeat that treatment for about a week if the fish perk up.

what is Furazone Green. i have never herd of it before. ill look for it tomorrow. not sure if any place in town carries it though.

Its a mild , wide spectrum drug that works for most fish ails, such as fungus etc....use it in light doses. Let the dose ride for 2 days, then do a slight water chg...then dose again...do that for about 2 weeks...

I would go with tetracycline, you can buy that medicated if they are still eating, or add it to the tank version, but don't use both as you will overdose the fish, need more frozen and veg in there diet, as to many dried foods can lead to constipaion and swim bladder problems, cook the shell for a few minutes, let cool down, pop out of shell, then squeeze between fingers and add to the tank, good luck.

Now the problem is that because theres not been enough water changes, bacteria has built up and infected the fish so making them more open to other diseases.
If possible can you get a large rubbermaid to tide you over until you get a bigger tank as you will need to seperate the fish with the popeye.
You will need 20 gallons and a bigger filter and a heater to get the temperature up to boost the immunity levels.
Do 50% water changes with gravel vacs on the 10 gallon for a few days and dont feed for 3 days. Then get a couple of frozen peas, boil for 4 minutes, cool and then de-shell and squash up and feed the fish that for a couple of days. Then add maracyn 2 to get rid of any lasting bacteria.

If its just popeye then its a kidney disease and you can try and treat with Erythromycin for ten days.
If it progresses to raised scales then its either abdominal dropsy or an aeromonas infection if you get ulcers and you can buy oxilinic acid to add to the feed but this is expensive.
Getting them all to eat a medicated food is important and i would suggest medigold which should be widely available.
Raising the temperature in the 10 gallon as well will help them fight infections.

Epsom salt will only help if its got dropsy and if it gets to that stage then really you should think about euthenizing. Buy some clove oil just in case.

thanks. im off to go get some peas and maracyn 2. how long will need to treat for? i have just noticed him flicking his gills against the gravel again. what will i need to treat that?
