Glofish Facts

HATERS!!. all you guys are like my grandpa- stubborn and hate change
pimp almost every one of your posts here that i have seen have been flames. please thats not what these boards are for.

How hypocritical is that..

As for generic fish forum bickering; act your age guys. :good:

AfishDude- you should read this- no offensive but every post i see of you. you are offending or putting someone down.

100% agree, He actually genuinely annoys me with some of his quite silly posts and incorrect information.

Anyway, I think this is cool. I don't know much about the process, But I watched a program on TV about the pigs they made glow green, They had 100% normal behaviour and what not, Rather cool :)

what about the glo-fish making love to another species of fish and that hybrid baby is glowy and that makes love etc etc, what about evolution, if they can survive in the wild, who knows, they may evolve into another fish species that glows in the dark and/or becomes a land dwelling amphibian. Wont happen in the near future but think about the children!!!

It says on the site that alot of the profit goes to help the research. also i will take xtra care for them not to get into the wild. but even if they somehow do, i live in IL so it will be killed by winter. But what if a green glowfish and a red glowfish mate?????

u would get a Christmas glofish.. lol

but theres other ways to detect pollution. frogs are a great natural indicator species

It said, something very similar to this:

and we care why?

this should be in oddballs

;)

Never argue with an idiot; they will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

My advice: We don't care who started or edited it!
Anyhow, I say we leave genes alone lest we send something extinct.

(can you imagine how pissed off you would be if some of your fry ended up expressing this phenotype because 3 or 4 generations ago one of its parents was a glow fish?)

Glofish are sterile. All Glofish before being shipped from a labratory are hit with light doses of radiation to ensure that they can never spawn. While im sure this is not fool proof, there have yet to be ANY documented cases of the fish being raised outside of the labratory that produces them. :good:

I think the fact that they can detect impuritys in the water is very neat, and because of this i think its somthing to be looked into. think about it, no test strips or kits, "hey, mr.glofish is blue today, my ammonia is a bit high..." I understand that there is a moral side of this argument, but the fish wont suffer, he gets fed like the rest of your tank, and lives as happy a life as a domesticated fish can.

Glofish aren't sterile 100%. Some are capable of breeding and there are several reports of them breeding. However it's illegal to sell any offspring you may have which is kind of stupid.

Simple way to look at this, you don't like the fish, don't buy them. They are not the next great evil or monster or abuse of science or cause of some mass extinction or whatever the alarmist propaganda is these days. They're small, genetically modified fish that wouldn't last a week in the wild. They aren't that bad though I guess if you've already bought into the genetic modification equals bad belief, nothing will change your mind.

that would be a great idea about having fish as a test kit. sounds kinda funky right now but i bet in the fututre stuff like that will be every where.

Teelie, sure the chances of any individual glofish lasting a week in the wild is awfully small. But, you cannot say that about 100% of all the fish that may accidentally get released. That is my problem here. Nothing is 100%. I also don't consider myself an alarmist, genetic modification has been around since the beginning of farming 10,000 or so years ago. Mankind has always cultivated the breeds of plants and animals that gave them the best results. But, we had always done it with cross-breeding and selective breeding -- in a pretty natural way. It is only recently that we have the ability to splice in specific sequences of DNA. And I think that we just don't know enough yet to be tinkering with these issues and giving them the chance to get out. Obviously, science needs to learn how to custom design DNA, but I think that all the results should be kept very controlled, in a lab, and not released to the public. Science has only just recently sequenced mankind's DNA. But, and here's the real kicker, they only have a tiny amount of the proteomic ability mapped out. That is to say, we only know a small amount of what proteins the DNA can make -- just having the DNA sequence isn't much help without knowing what proteins the DNA encodes and what those proteins do. I just don't think that we know enough to splice in whatever DNA sequences we want, where we want, because we don't know what proteins could possibly come out of such actions, and what effects those proteins may have in the wild.

Are genetically modified glofish any worse than other non-native fish though? What could the proteins possibly do in the wild they wouldn't do otherwise? They aren't radioactive, they aren't contagious, they can't infect any other animal or do much of anything. When you eat something, does the DNA of the food you've ingested somehow alter your DNA in any way? Same goes for this.

but how do you think eating the fish will mutate the the fish that ate it... i eat oranges and i have no charcteristics(sp?) of an orange same with cow- apple- chicken.. etc.

haha thats classic, but i eat loads of chicken and now i sleep perched on the back of a chair?
