George's Journal

Platy fry has been taken into account - thanks for the warnings though.

I do have a healthy popualtion of MTS but don't really fancy pond snails.

I'm looking to rid my tank of the baby machine known as platy. Going to try and trade them in at my LFS for some live food or something, started with 4 and now must have about 15 of them swiming about!

Good thing is that on average I only ever get 1 - 2 fry for each birth, even then something in the tank takes that amount down to 1.

My 4yr old likes them but not as much as the shrimp

George, where do you get your glosso plantlets from? I bought some from Greenline, but i wasnt v happy with the quality and i got 3 bunches with many of the lower leaves brown or dead, so did not get as many as i would have hoped into the substrate.

By the way, nice tank :)

I was sent them by another member - RYO.

When planting glosso you need to cut the stems into seperate plantlets, two leaves either side of the stem and plant these. It takes a while but is well worth it - http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?s=&sho...ndpost&p=938515

Hi George.

First i gotta say that i love ur tank. I have been following ur journal for a long time now and think that while the layout now looks amazing, i think i like the most recent previous one better... the one with the sloping down to the right and triangular glosso carpet. I was thinking, if the fern is too large now for u to do that setup, maybe u can trim the fern? cos really, that layout is beautiful IMO. Like u said, the layout now looks very symmetrical.

Anyhow, i am not here to critisize ur tank. I think its absolutely wonderful... infact ive been snatching ideas off ur layout. I'll post a pic of my tank sometime...Im not very good with photographing my tank.

One question tho. I also have a problem of surface scum building up on the water surface, and I know that ur new little mate, the platy, was added to ur tank to eat the scum, but has he been doing the job nicely? I mean, for one little platy can he clear the entire surface of scum? If so i think i will get myself one of them bad boys. :hey:

Thanks.

Hi Jer-

Thanks for the feedback, always good to hear.

As for the Platy - I'm pretty sure it's single handedly cleared up my problem. The only other think I can think of is my swtich in filtration. But there's even less surface agitation now so I doubt that's solved it. The Platy is very active at the surface, not gasping but definitlely eating someting.

Jeeeeeez i can never get over how healthy that fern looks. I keep getting blackened edges on mine and gsa on the anubias :/

My little lad recons your setup looks like a giant flower crab :D

I just saw the last picture gf, and I love the platy!! It's so cute! They are a great fish, have fun. Have you named the fish yet?

That fern just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Almost too big, but who cares! You could probably sell that for a pretty penny if you ever wanted to part with it. You inspired me on my 36g to attach ferns, but my ferns are quite puny.

Great job! Keep us posted on the platies. Can't wait to see pictures of little fry, which you will have.

George, just popped in to say your tank is looking gorgeous. Has that fern grown? It's huge!

Thank you kind ladies.

The fern is too big I agree. I had a massive hacking session the other day with a surgical scapel! Removed about 100 leaves and it's reduced the overall size to around 75%.

I've also moved things about a little - similar positions to my profile photo. There's a couple of "major" changes though and I have another surprise plant to share with you - clue - it's not a stem plant. (Keep quiet those "in the know"!)

I'm hoping that when the glosso and sag fill back in that it will look its best. We'll see.

Oh, and I'm staying UK-bound now until April, so hopefully I can see this layout develop into contest standard. We can't have Jimbooo claiming all the glory ;) .

Photo to follow when I've implemented a couple more minor layout changes.

You've had it such a long time and watched it grow from nothing almost like a child, I bet there was a tear in your eye as you tamed the beast.

Looking forward to the update :)

Isn't that the truth. I look at my tank like a member of the family... like one would a cat or dog. I look back at old pictures and am amazed at the transition, I'm sure like my parents do at pictures of me and my brother when we were babies.

It's funny isnt it.

 I'm not that bad!

There was a "what the hell have I done!" when I stepped back and saw the state of the fern - what a mess! Thankfully the leaves have positioned themselves toward the light and it looks fine now, just a smaller version of before.

Sometimes a seemingly backward step is necessary to progress.

wow that tanks amazing it has such an elegant look to it
oh yeah speaking of elegant hows your discus doing
Thanks.

The Discus left my tank months ago I'm afraid. I learnt the hard way that one shouldn't really keep Discus single, they need company of there own kind to be happy. Mistake - lesson learnt.

Thankfully my Platy seems happier, it's the most active fish in there and I can't believe how clean it keeps the surface from scum. I'm still debating whether or not to get some some more but I'm worried about fry and bio-load. I've started a thread in livebearers.
