Most probably diatoms mate..appear in new set ups and feed off any silicates, etc in the tank..a sure sign of a maturing and stabilising system there...
Although unsightly best left alone and it will disappear as quick as it appeared ...some cuc such as snails, stomatella ,etc will nibble on it...
Nothing to worry about and as said .actually a good sign !!!

and no im not using phosphate remover, but i must get some soon, been plaaning on it for tomorrow when i vist lfs :good:

Im still kinda confused. My tank is covered in diatoms, and im getting the water tested today.

if the parameters are good, should i get my cuc whilst im at the shop? and if i do, should i leave the diatoms for them to eat?

thanks

james

(im also going to get phospate/carbon remover today)

:good:

If you have had your ammonia spike, which you have
then your nitrite spike, which you have
then a nitrate spike - think you have just had
done a 50% water change
waited 24 hours and tested again
nitrates < 10
then buy cuc

So, get your water tested, do the water change, test again and then the cuc (but not the shrimp!)

oh and also, im considering using a similar sized tank as a sump. is this pointless? it will increase my total volume to 26 GAL/ 116 litres, but is there any point to this, what more could i keep?. just like an extra shrimp, or would it be something more interesting, or nothing extra at all?

Never pointless putting in a sump - can't remember your exact stocking level, can you remind us please
