Fish Quiz

I have a 500 gal tank with bare bottom and minimal decor.  What is the average recommended total watts of heaters that should be used to heat water 9 degrees F higher than room temperature?  Also how many widely available submersible glass tube type heaters of what wattage would you need.

State your source for your answer as there may be a range of correct answers.

The answer was on the tip of my tongue a few minutes ago.. Then my laptop died and now i cant remember it!! :(

I always work on the basis of 1w per litre, which assuming you are using US gallons, 500gal equates to just short of 1900l. However, large tanks lose heat at a much slower rate than small tanks, so you would need less than 1900w. I would suggest somewhere around 1.5-1.6kw of heater power would do the job.

I would probably go with 5 no 300w heaters.

As my internet source led to an answer very close to that answer,  I'll give it to you.  I have read sources that say 5w per gallon and a source that estimated it at 3 watts per gallon.    I believe you:re  correct  in that  a larger aquarium loses heat at a slower rate than a smaller tank.   So 5 300 watt submersible heaters or 3 500 watt heaters would be fine.

because it would be better in a very large tank to spread out the heat souces and to have backup heaters if one should stop heating.

I asssumed that size tank would have sump filtration and that would be where the heater would go.

but a couple of backup heaters may be good if the sump heater fails---all heater should be run through an electronic temperature controller

i'm a newbie when it comes to equipping very large tanks

Perhaps a time limit for posting questions might be an idea.

If say, no questions after 2 or 3 hours, someone can suggest to post a question.
