everyone say goodbye....

there is nothing i wouldn't pay to keep my pets healthy.. Our family dog passed away a few months back, 5 years after having a stroke, she couldnt walk or anything fow about a month but she got ofer it (all be it she went deaf).. she had pet insurance that covered her costs for drugs etc... but it only covered her for 1 year after diagnosis (that sucked) she ended up costing about £40 a week in drugs after 2 more strokes... BUT she go over all 3 of them!! the ended up dying of an infection of her uteris(spelling) total un-connected to the strokes etc!

what i'm trying to say is i'm really sorry for you and the poor dog :(, I'm sure theres "life in the old dog yet" - keep trying with your dad! (Show him thats its really upsetting you!!)

I agree with you smithrc - there is nothing I wouldn't pay. I have no children- my dogs are it for now. Recently we lost Sandy, our chocolate lab to AIHA. She developed it suddenly and fought a losing battle for four days. Not only did we lose her but we had a $500 vet bill to pay afterward, and that was even after the vet whittled some of the costs down for us. Now we're getting insurance for our dogs because it would have covered nearly everything.

i know how it is about the hicky person...my dad is like that, but at least he would do it for our Dog, how old are you? maybe you can tell him to pay the operation, and you are going to work and going to pay him back ? im really sad about your dog :(, but what shelly25 said is really helpful!

i hope she gets better soon :sad: my fingers are crossed!

We have pet insurance on our dogs and some life insurance on our horses. We had a horse that ran up close to 3,000 dollars in vet bills, so now we're prepared. I'm really sorry about your dog, but it's just really sad that something can be done and it won't be...

well, theres the choice of surgery, which wouldn't be the best probably, for an older dog, or just keep her still. which my dad is yelling at everyone to make sure she doesn't move around alot.

i'm 16, and i don't have a job. wouldn't really have much time for a job between marching band, and karate.

Chin up , be strong.
Mabye with rest and time things will get better. Buffered asprin may help with the discomfort and swelling.
MAM
Don't be so hard on the people here . The dog is 9 and the Vet may even have campained against surgery because of the age of the dog. My oldest pup is 13 and there is no way they would put her through surgery at this age and she's real healthy.( except for a cyst on her bum). The vet also may not offer payment terms ours dosen't , you can apply for financing with an outside company but if you don't have decient credit your out .
Rest and time are the best bets here .Personally I would do the same.

it seems i misunderstood some things. let me quote her paper....

Correction of ACL rupture requires surgery. A skilled surgeon can fashion a replacement ligament and stabilize the joint so it functions normally or near normally. If surgery is not performed within a few days to a week, arthritic changes will begin that cannot be reversed, even with surgery
ok, sadie has been limping here and there occasionaly for the last month or two...maybe even longer. ok, back to the quote...
Occasionally, the injury that causes a rupted anterior cruciate ligament will also result in tearing of one or both of the menisci or "cartilages." At the time of surgery, these are examined and removed if necessary.
surgery is basically canceled out any way, because it is too late. the torn ligiment is irriversable. she has only stopped using the leg completely today. she is taking medicine right now. i think it's called "Rimadyc" or something like that. when she is done taking that, we have a perscription for enteric coated aspirin.

all in all, the only thing for her to do right now is rest up.

Your dad knows life can be hard, I'm sure if he could he would. My scriptures tell me that our animals do have souls and there will be a place to live for eternity.
Take the time to show all the love you can and your pet will be waiting happily for you at some point.
Work hard at your studies so when you get older you will be able to pay for the needs of your pets.
I'm glad that we now have a President that supports the military. Take care.

so sorry to hear about your dog
my father would never pay for surgery
he can't afford it, so if the dog was suffering
he would do what they did in the old days
take it to my grandmas farm, lay him on his favorite blanket, feed him a few raw weiners (or whatever he loves the best) pat the dog gently on the top of his head
the place a shotgun directly on top of his head and pull the trigger
i know it sounds hard
but unfortunatley if you can't pay for surgery,
not alot of people will knowingly take an ill dog off of your hands
the best thing for it if it is suffering is a bullet
i love animals and would never harm them for any reason
except for mercy
and although it sounds cruel, a shotgun, point blank to the top of the dogs head is painless and humane
one minute it is enjoying a treat and a good petting, the next everything is black
he doesn't have time to think
i'm not saying this is right for your dog (just sick dogs in general)
i have no idea how bad off your dog is,
but i will say that i don't think your father is a bad person
he obviously has reasons for not paying
but if the situation comes to a bullet
don't feal bad
the dog feels no pain or anxiety
just love
and it will leave this world on a good note
remembering what joy you brought to it when it had nowhere else to turn
good luck sweety :flowers:

oh man i'm totally gunna get flamed for that
but IMHO, a bullet is less stressful for a dog then taking it to the vet, placing it on a table, and giving it the needle
it may feal happy once it has the needle, but alot of dogs are afraid of the vet
i DID get a dog euthanized at the vet once (she was 19 years old and her hips had disinigrated)
but she was not afraid
otherwise i would have used a bullet :/
well actualy i would get my father to
i wouldn't have the heart

thanks. the only reason i wouldn't be able to handle that is the blood. i'd rather have her put to sleep in the vet. i'd gladly stay by her side the hole time. unlike what we had to do with my sisters dog sammy. she only liked my sister, her husband, and us. she couldn't keep her 2 dogs anymore. so she gave them both to a person who wanted them. not long after that, sammy bit their neighbor. so the person who had her called my sister back and said she was dangerous and couldn't keep her. which the only reason she was mean is because of the other dog they had, chewy. sammy was VERY protective of her. but thats not a good enough excuse for bitting a person. so my sister got her back, and had us take he to the human society....no treats or anything....we left her scared in a cement floor cage to be put to sleep by people she didn't know. :-(

and i bet the only reason she was so protective, was probably cuz when she was a puppy, my sis owned her brother too. then not long after they had them, she found out that some of the puppys had a rare disease and all had to be put to sleep. sammy was probably afraid of loosing chewy....but who knows.

i haven't anything against the bullet...just something i couldn't do. when it is her time to go, i'll try to make her as comfertable as possible before she gets the needle. i wonder if they do home calls? cuz she is really afraid of the vet.

sheesh...she can't get her bum up the step to the back door!! all it is is this:

**********| this long thing is the door.
ouside ****| this is inside the house now....
*********_|______
******__|
_____|

she got her front half on that first step and looked at me and my bf like "well....a little help here?!!!". i tried to tell her to go in, but she refused to step up with her back half. so i had to lift her bum up and wheel barrel her into the house! took her a minute to try and figure out what i was doin though. lol.

Towel walk her. Take a towel and roll it up, wrap it under her belly so you can hold the two ends on top and lift. That way you can support her back end and she can walk with the front. A trick you would have learned had she had the surgery, but it will work just fine now as well.
