I own a Tetratec 1200 and 3 Juwel tanks and I can tell you it definately does NOT fit in the cupboard of a Rio 180. It fits in the Trigon 350 cupboard and probably the Vision 260 (though haven't tried it).

I had an EX1200 in a Rio240, it fits with loads of room to spare

Hmmm only the middle bit, that's annoying.. I'll have a think about it, the tetratec would be my preferred choice though..

Understandable reservations about drilling your new stand; shame the 1200 won't fit in the cupboard - it's such a good filter for the price. I'm not even sure if the EX700 would fit, but I suspect it might. Mind you, that model has a big drop in flow rate for a saving of only £20.

Fluval externals have a narrower design. I think the Fluval 405 (1300 LPH) would fit in sideways, because it's predecessor (the 404) fits in my Rio 180 no probs; the 405 looks very similar indeed but you'd have to get that confirmed! It's more expensive than the Tec 1200 at £120 though.

405 for just under £110

Comparing the Fluval 405 to a TetraTex ex1200 is like comparing AIDS to the common cold, I know which I'd rather have.
