Do You Talk To Your Fish?

I've also had similar experience with my large oranda goldfish. They recognize the person who feeds/takes care of them (which of course is me) and I talk loud enough so they can "hear" me with their lateral lines. They learn to respond to voice.

Fish are much more intelligent animals than the world has given them credit for.

Edit: And yes....Martha is a fabulous fish (from seeing/reading about her). :D

We talk to most of our fish but mostly Martha.

Martha now recognises some words and actually reponds to them.

If she's resting on the bottom and I say "Martha, Prawn!" she will come to the surface in anticipation of being fed.

Also if she's resting and we call her name she will come to the glass and wave her fins like a puppy wagging its tail.

"Night night Martha" will almost always result in her burying herself ready for lights out.

Martha is the best fish EVER!

she's a beauty... i'd love to have a fish with as much personailty as that but i do prefer alot of tiny fish to a few big fish...
I'm sure she inspires your art... which is awesome

Martha is the best!!!! I don't have mine trained to that extent, but they definitely recognize me. I also prefer a lot of small fish, but mine all have definite personalities. I have 5 mollies, one of which (Pearl) is the diva of the tank, always the first to come to the corner where I am standing, eats out of my hand, and actually kind of snuggles up inside my hand even when there's no food  . And my swordtail, Inigo, is the champion of all females present. If they are getting overly harrassed by frisky males, Inigo will step in to defend the damsels!!B) Opal is my newest platty, she is a rainbow platy and very shy :*) . The only ones that don't really take much notice of me are the Roxbury boys (8 cardinal tetras) !! And I definitely talk to my fish all the time!!!!!

Wish my dogs did something like that :p ... I love Martha!

Haha, I hadn't checked on this topic and now I come into Chit Chat after a few days and there are heaps of replies! Thanks everyone! I don't feel so.. 'different' now!

Of course I talk to my fish, along with my dog and other peoples pets just because they are an animal doesnt mean that they don't enjoy interaction!

My bf brings my tank to life by giving the fish voices and makes out that they hold conversations even though most of the time its stuff like "Oi that's my patch get out of here" or "get here now" just random stuff it's great! I would be suprised though if I had a full blown conversation with a fish now that would be creepy! Bettas are great to talk to as they interact with you more than some of the others!
