I have a 20gallon fishtank thet's pretty bare except for some plastic plants. i'm not sure if i'm ready to move into the realm of real plants yet. I wqas wondering if i could make some diy dedcorations especially a protective cave or castle. What materials are safe to use in the tank?

also my tank is starting to seen very small. i have another glass tank, i don't know the exact size but it looks between 10 and 15 gals, is there any way i can connect the two? to allow fish to feeely move between them? I couldn't think of a safe way.

Quick and easy cave... teracotta pots or coconut shells ?

As for linking two tanks.... Ive had this on my mind for years ! drilling would be the preferred method, although a semicircle of pipe across the tops of the two tanks would hold water if filled, and both ends remained submerged - wether the fish would use it is another matter ! :/

Ah i just happen to have a coconut shell lying around. i'll cut it tommorrow. And yes i doubt i'll be able to
connect those tanks and won't risk drilling my expensive tank... atleast not yet

Make sure you boil the coconut shell for an hour then soak it in clod water for 2 hours before adding it to your tank.

Try to scrape off as much of the 'hair' as you can although I dont know if it will harm your tank as I generally leave it on mine to help java moss grow on it.

Is that COLD water ? I boiled mine, and the water was a horrible purple colour.... might do it again before adding to the tank... how fast does the moss grow on it ?

You have to buy the java moss in clumps but it will take a good month or two for it t actually becvome established on the coconut shell.

I just added the coconut shell today it's so hard to crack, but i managed to make a hole, big enough for a fish to go through. It looks so cooland tropical! Although only the snails seem interested.

There's nowhere here that sells live plantes here though. I might be able to go down to the river and get some.
but i fear bacteria and moss.

Where is here?

Many people buy their live plants mail order or from eBay etc.

In which case, collecting your own is a definite possibility. Exposed water here is frozen at the moment. If you have access to regular aquarium antibacterial and anti parasitic medications, treating them should be easy.

I built a cave and terrace from some slate tiles to form the base and roof, slate chippings (from a diy store garden centre - B&Q) and aquarium safe silicon sealant. Looks like this:

I have frequently used slate/silicone. The thing to be aware of with slate is it can have very sharp edges which should be filed off as they can injure a fish "flicking" against them.

anyone have ideas for a diy gravel siphon/vac? I was thinking pf using a pump but can i just used the suction caused by siphoning water?
