Sorry to hear you had to take your sailfin back, they're gorgeous plecs =)
I'm pretty sure that the information on the website is correct, apart maybe about them being easier to breed
However, please keep in mind that zebra plecs like to be kept in groups because they are social, plus they cost between 80 and 175 pounds each (Depending on sex and size).

Seeing as I doubt you'll be willing to put that much money down right now, have a look at this pinned topic:
30 Plecos under 8 inches

There are many alternatives to the zebra plec that cost less and still stay small. An ancistrus (bristlenose) is the first that springs to mind; usually easy to get hold of, quite easy to look after and very active in the tank. And they do not insist on company. A clown plec might be another one- though they are usually shyer. Or a flash pleco. For a mature tank, there are lots of plecs that look just as fancy as the zebra but are more affordable. Check out PlanetCatfish for ideas.

yea i can see what you guys are saying and i would proberly buy 3 zebras i nt wanting to breed but if thy do bonus the reason i like them is coz thy are so unique

but im sure i cud find them for less

join a very long queue for zebra plecs.
unlikely to find one for under £80-£90

just to add, clown plecs are indeed very shy. i have one that i didnt see for a whole year, i thought he was dead and eaten. then once while i was doing a good cleaning, i see him shoot out from behind a plant. scared the hell out of me.

if you get a clown pleco, you may never ever see it. cute little guy, but quite elusive.

You are being a bit ambitious, REAL Zebra plecs are hard to come buy and you'll be getting a bargin at £80 for a single one, they normally retailer for over £100 near to £150.

They are very rare in the hobby thats why they cost so much, and they are beautyiful fish too.

There are many species like them but you ar still looking at between £20-£50 your better off getting something more common like a bulldog plec, clown plec, L001, rusty plec or a bristlenose plec.

I wouldn't recommend an L001 or a Rusty - both grow far too big, neither stop at 6", the Rusty growing to up to 12", and the L001 exceeding that.

I'm so sorry about your gibby - I think you ultimately did the right thing and I commend you for it. I'll leave the experts in smaller plecs to he advice for a substitute, and wish you the best of luck! :good:

The reason for the zebra plecs being so unique is that they are threatened by extinction- which isn't really a reason for wanting to keep them without breeding them. There are some lovely other small loricariids, that are not under quite such threat but are still not in everybody's tank. Have you checked out the chocolate zebra plec? the leopard frog? the Queen Arabesque?

ok ill have a look the queen arabesque sounds kl i jst want sumthin different thts all

I recommend looking at the albino bristlenose catfish.

I saw pics on planetcatfish.com website and was amazed (so will you be).

Earlier this year some 3cm ones appeared, imported to England from Holland apparently and I bought the last two. Then, last week a pair of fully grown adults appeared in one of the shops in my city - the first I had ever seen. They claimed they were from the wild(!).

The adult male is the ugliest fish (in a nice way) I have ever seen and all the kids at the local primary school where the aquarium is just love him and his mate who are in a 20 gallon with a few platies and harequins.

Albino bristlenoses are common...They breed easily too.

Take a look at my plecs for sale if you fancy something a bit different ;)

BN arent really an L number plecs they have a common name, of bristlenose plecs :shifty:

Just becuase a plec has an L number just means its hasnt been described officially. I think lol
As for them being wild, I doubt it as albino's dont last long in the wild, for obvious reasons such as they are easily seen by preditors.

Ive bought one of those Plecs off Tropicalfish4u

Says they growt to 25cm max, is this the case, is a leopard different to sailfin ?
