Danny's Cycle...

Its certainly possible that you may be overfeeding.

Only feed once a day, and I'd actually feed once every other day for the time being to keep waste and ammonia levels down.

Do you have a gravel vac?

You will need to clean the gravel weekly

Andy

Well I am going to start feeding every other day now also...

But I give in when they look hungry lol...

Yeah I have a gravel Vac... but That means taking all my decor out and putting it back... :( it looks so good now! haha

I have the same ruin ornament as you in my wcmm tank !
My nitrite spiking tank is my betta one, I feed him twice a day but he has 2-3 pellets and eats them before they go anywhere so no waste. lol

I used Prime last night to see if it would help stop the huge overnight spike and I am pleased to say it held the level at around 0.10, so no horrid spike when I was not there to control it. It dissipates in 24 hours apparently so I will still be able to see how the levels are going. I highly recommend it for emergency use. I was worried sick about it spiking to 5 again in the 7 hours I would be sleeping, this helped so much. Not adding any more now as I want it to vanish so I can see the levels again. may only use at night to keep fish safe.

When it spiked at 5 I removed the fish and did a 90% change and it dropped to 0.25 straight away, but kept rising hourly from that point and I was doing a 50-70% wc every few hours yesterday. At least the prime gives me and fish some breathing space for a few hours. He will get another large change this morning with my usual dechlorinator so the Prime will dissipate and I can see where I am at. Just hope the spike doesn't last too long. This is stressful and I was knackered last night from all the changes and testing.

Mine seems to be following a weird cycle, I get nitrite spikes of 1.0 every 3-4 days, which one large water change helped, the ammonia drops to 0 at the same time as the spike, then next day the ammonia comes back up and nitrite drops off, did this for about 15 days then I got the big 5.0 spike which wouldn't stop rising after water changes, it lowered but rose fast throughout the day. My snail tank seems to be doing the same thing, while my minnow tank is much slower, been going for weeks, was progressing okay but then I forgot to turn my filter back on after a water change and it was off for about 5 hours before I realised and I think that zapped the bacs, so starting over and about 20 days in from there, but they don't get any large spikes, stays steady in their tank and small daily water changes keep it under control......

Im only in this situation thanks to duff advice from LFS, then I found here and will never do a fish-in cycle again, not fair on me or fish, terrified Im gonna lose them.

Good luck Danny, I'll be watching closely as your in the same situation as me, nice to see another person experiencing the same, makes you feel less alone lol

There doesn't seem to be any spikes in my tank though...?

Every time I test the water I get the same reading although my NitrAte will rise and fall now and then.

I'm not going to perform any water changes today to see how not feeding the fish and also because I'm going to add some more of the AmQuel+ I bought yesterday

I just want this stupid NitrIte to drop and stay at 0ppm haha, starting to get right on my nerves now.
But like you say, I am NEVER going to do a Fish-in Cycle ever again!

To be honest I didn't even want to do it, but my cousin kinda forced me in to taking his fish. Great.

The fish do seem happy in the tank, and a lot of people (mainly LFS people) have said they are suprised that my two Guppies have survived... But they are tough little fish :)

I will keep everyone updated on my situation.

Also, I will do another water test soon to see how things went over night.

You will probably be able to buy the fry by monday so that you can put them in tuesday, by which time you should be sorted :good:

I'm no expert but I've been reading your other threads and you seem to be doing a fish-in-cycle with 2 guppies. The usual advice is to only double the number of fish as a maximum when you add more fish (ok they're fry so won't contribute as much as an adult but 20 seems a lot). Are you planning for a fair few of them to die? It just seems a lot of fish for such a small tank. I take it they're all going in the one tank which you state is 2'x1'x1' in another post - that gives a max size of 15 gallons - but then the corners are cut back so it's perhaps 12g?

This would give a maximum of 12" of adult fish. Males average 1.2" and females average 2.4" (from what I have read) - you also need 2 or 3 females to each male if you're having them mixed. So really you could have a maximum of about 2 males and 4 females, obviously less the two you already have - so 20 seems a lot to buy??

I might have got the wrong end of the stick in which case I apologise - but I've been looking into this myself as I plan on having guppies and your order of 20 fry shocked me a little! If there is good reason for it I want to know for my research into how many I should get!

Yes you are correct about me doing a fish-in cycle with the two guppies, However they are in the smaller of my two tanks...
The one that is near cycled has the two guppies and I want to add a few more into that tank.

My other tank is a standard tank of the dimensions you have seen (2x1x1)/ no cut off corners. Which I hope to get up and running before the fry turn up... in which case I can add the fry to that tank. However if things don't go to plan and the tank isn't ready in a week or two... well I have two options.
My cousin has a tank set up so I could give some fry to him until my tank is ready, or I have a mate who will take them for me for now.

I really only wanted just the black fry... however I feel that if I get a few I was thinking that the journey to mine may actually kill off a couple... on rough estimates would maybe leave me 15...? I'm just guessing to be honest with you on this outcome... Ive never shipped fish before, or received either... So I don't know what to expect. But thats how I was thinking when Placing the order.

My first instinct was to split the fry and place 10 in my small tank where the two guppies are now and 10 in another tank (that's if they all survive of course)

Now you have got me thinking if I am actually over doing it...

Sounds better if you have another tank!

Now your only problem will come in a few months time when they starting breeding and each female releasing 25+ fry at a time - that's the bit I'm trying to find more info on, I'm hoping if I leave the fry they will get eaten.

Good Luck with it!
