Danno's Nanos And Pico Journal

Alright! My second coral opened today!

Green Star Polyps!

I really like these. I've been wanting them for months.

wow those are beautiful. Do you reccomend me upgrading to a 29? Or should i stay at the 12 gallon? I could sell the 29 to my friend. Its framless, acrylic, pre-drilled top, and the back has a built-in black background. Sorry for hijacking, and again, i love your corals!!

I don't know what is happening at the moment. My Green Star Polyps and my Red Zoos haven't come out. I just did a water chage yesterday and I also tested my water. Could I be over lighting them? SHould I make a shorter photo-period? I'm currently running my lights from 10AM to 9PM. My Green Star Polyps are elevated towards the top of the tank. Should I set the rock on the gravel and let them stay their?

Light is rarely the cause for these guys to not open. More likely is bigtime imbalances in calcium/alkalinity/pH, over/under temperature, or most often, high specific gravity from a malfunctioning hydrometer.

My pH is 8.3, Calcium 400ppm, 81 degrees, hydrometers says it is 1.023. Any emergency percautions that I should take?

I dont understand that site. will you explain it? I want to make sure my hydromenter is correct too.

I didn't understand it eather, but im heading out right now with a large bottle of sample water from my tank to go to the pet store for help. Ill have an update soon.

Well they checked my hydrometer and my salinity and it was ok. My SG was 1.026. The owner and I were talking and we thought my Peppermint Shrimp migh tbe pissing my corals off seeing that they are softies. I will have to see what happens tomarrow.

PS: Alk and Cal were ok.

Ok I'll paraphrase Randy's directions for you guys :p

1) Procure 2L soda bottle or anything else that holds 2L of water
2) Measure into the bottle 1/4 cup of plain old iodized table salt
3) Add 1 more teaspoon of salt to the bottle
4) Add 2 liters of RO water to the bottle
5) Shake vigorously until dissolved
6) Let stand to equillibrate to room temp

The resulting solution has a salinity of 35ppt or a specific gravity of 1.026 at 25 degrees C. So, if you make that solution and your Hydrometer tells you say 1.022, it is reading .004 below the standard and should be normalized. So then you take that same hydrometer and measure your tank and get 1.024 for a reading, that in actuality is 1.028 and too high... Make sense?

My salinity has been stabilized but my red zoos and GSP haven't opened again since the first time. Looks like im going to have to thin my clean up crew because they are being to picky. Ill have to do more research.

ok thanks ski, i get it now. How many degrees farenheight is 25 C? How would i get it that temp if its in a soda bottle?
