Cutting Down On Technology 'in-tank'

My Tank is rather small (24x8x8 inches) it currently has an external hang on filter, and a nice arcadia-arcpod, along with waterlettuce i have to remove daily ! the fish love the tank, and are always active and come to the front glass when I arrive. However, more and more i am starting to hate the sight of the long heater along the back glass. Now I would like to keep this heater as a spare, is there anyway of heating the tank with an 'external' heater? is there another 'hang on' device that might do the same job? any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I think there are external heaters, another option is making a sump and putting the heater in there or using an external filter with built in heater.
