Fight the temptation to house your male with a female. This is not a safe combination. The male will abuse and often outright kill the female.
Bettas shouldn't be kept with other anabantidae. He will fight with them because they are too similar to his own kind. Male and female bettas should be kept separately until they are ready to spawn. In the bigger tank they [would do] okay because the female [would be able to] find places to be away from him.
Even female bettas are territorial, although not as aggressive as male bettas. However, if both are kept together, this could prove to be a fatal combination.
fish keeping is about personal experience, not quoting other websites, if they ever had a fight then i would seperate them but after a year in a tank together and no probs, whats the issue.
not to be a party pooper - but i dont consider the picture cute, the fish look stressed out, and exhausted; probably from chasing each other round the tank. and to be so close to the surface of the water is generally a sign that they are struggling as they will want to breath as easily as possible - and being surface breathers wedging themselves up high is handy.
