Happy New Year to you all!!

Ok as an update I have been away from home & my tank for 4 days returned home only to perform 15% water change & add holiday feeding block. Then I was away for a furter 5 days. I returned home late last night, all fish seem ok for thier neglect. All exept Crawford my Betta.

He is acting normally, but his tail looks a bit freyed and has some bits missing. I assume he is either ill of has been got at by another fish.

Do you think Melafix would be a good thing to add to water to help him? Also as no other fish are ill should i separate him? [Note: Some other fish still have part tails from previous Killer Danio experience]

I have not had chance yet to do water condition reading will do tonight & let you know tomorrow.

Check the ends of the fins where parts are missing. Is there a blackish coloration there?

As far as i can see the ends are not black jist looks a bit stringy, like it is disolved. have been reading all over here and i dont think its fin rot wot do you think?

-_-

I am a newbie.... but have had three cases of finrot already

In each case the ends were blackish... when the fins regenerate it looks opaque.

Thanks for the inquiry I will look @him some more when I get home this pm. I think he needs something just not sure wot? Could really do with advice.

I thought i had finally got it going ok, when nothing had died in the last 7 days!

If you have a separate tank handy might be a good thing to separate him. If you put him in a small 1-2 gallon tank, you will have to do full water changes every few days (1-3) and if it was finrot I would keep the water as clean as possible.

If i separate him, should i add anything to water i.e. extra salt, tonic, melafix?
I have a 1.5 tank and heater he could live in for a bit.
Is fin rot contageous {spelling} then?
It would also let me know if others were nipping @ him.
How long does after cure does new growth happen?

As far as I know finrot in contagious.

We have very few meds available in my part of the world so for finrot I have used salt (not iodized) and methlyne blue alternatively, but I think malefix is the recommended remedy.

I would really wait for one of the guru's here to show up. Clean water and a separate tank cant hurt.

The growth should be visible in two days. But again I am a newbie.

By the way, be careful how you handle him. Don't use a net. Just scope him up with a cup, gently. He might even go inside a cup voluntarily if you are patient and hold it near him.

Thank you so much Ral,

I will take your advice of separating him, & will wait for futher advice before giving him meds. I will do salt & other normal stuff. Lets keep fingers crossed that he gets better.

Will keep him separte till i see that he has significant growth of tail back.

-_-

Your welcome. I think wuv, Julie and Sorrel and the rest of the gang should be checking in soon. The will give you better advice.

Just a thought, could a strong current caused by pump be responsible for the demise of his tail he does sit close to thi intake & has been on high whilst we away?

Will isolate anyway as smaller tank has gentle pump & he can recuperate in peace.

Thats what it sounds like. He may have gotten tail in the intake. A salt treatment and then clean water with melafix should help.

So if i put him in small tank salt & melafix.
Wait a week or so then put him back in big tank, with pump turned down.
Does this sound like a good plan?
If anyone else has any further ideas let me know & I will give daily updates on his progress.
So that you can jump in & bail me out if needed??

Your other fish might not appreciate their filter being turned down.
