Cory Spawning

More News!!!
More Eggs!!!
Just looking around the 22g today and i found some eggs :D A larger batch behind the filter! There look to be around 120 eggs this time. Id be guessing now that it is the bronze and albinos again as my other cories are not yet mature. Id like to remove them and put them in with the other fry but im worried about moving them. How can i remove them carefully? I dont have a baster i heard you could use a credit card but do you just have to scrape from the bottom up and keep them in water while you transfer the eggs? The other fry are doing well and i cant see any deaths yet. i could have around 200 cories in a few months. In fact the way these are breeding it might be closer to 2000.

Hi Siamese Fighter05 :)

Your corys have been busy little fellows, and now you will be the busy one for a while! It's a bit of work taking care of a lot of fry! :hyper:

I don't like to move eggs because they are easily damaged. I prefer to let them hatch and move the fry after a few weeks, when they have had a chance to grow a little. But, I know sometimes that's just not possible.

I've had the best luck when I can move them as close to the hatching time as possible. They are fairly firm then and have a good chance of survival. In any case, they are the most delicate immediately after being laid and firm up from there. Eight hours after the spawning is a time many people like to do it. They have set up, but are still quite sticky and can be rolled off the glass and placed on glass in another aquarium. This has the advantage that you can relocate them in a small group so that you can place an air stone near it.

Whenever you do it, take great care to keep them under water the whole time. :D

Everything is still going well, although i made a complete disaster of moving the new eggs to the tank :(
I dont think i have any albino cories either as all the fry look dark brown as well as a orange belly full of BBS! They have grown quite well so far and i can make out whiskers and head shape. I have one of the most fattest fry cories ever! he must eat half the food i put in for everyone :)
I started feeding a bit of flake food today which they accepted so hopefully they can continue their growing sperts! I wish i could get some pics up for you :/

Hi Siamese Fighter05 :)

Don't feel bad about losing some of the eggs. They are fragile and moving them is more difficult than it sounds. My Gold Shoulder corys spawned again this morning and I had to move them. I know I will lose some, but since they are still young and their batches of eggs are small, I figure it's worth a try. You'll be getting more soon too, and practice will make you more successful with it.

Are you hatching your own bbs, or are you giving them the frozen ones?

Good luck with the fry! My cories laid about 110 eggs yesterday! And I didn't do a thing! My water is 7.5 pH anyway... :S . I'm glad you had success! You can also crumble a small piece of shrimp pellet, when it sinks, the parents get a lot of it, but, whats left is eagerly sucked up by the fryy. If you have another small tank, you could move them in, so only the fry could get food.

Hi everyone and thanks for your replies :)

Inchworm - Congrats with your gold shoulder they sound very interesting! how many eggs do they normally lay?
I am using frozen BBS so i have to do at least two water changes a day although i do 3 on a weekend days and any half day college i have also.

Mandarinfish - Goodluck with your cories also, im sure if you have any problems or questions inchworm will be able to help you out :)

Jollysue - You are too kind!! :)

Hi Siamese Fighter05 :)

The gold shoulders are another variation of the C. aeneus. They resemble the bronze corys but have a whiter sheen to them and a pale line down their sides, similar to the lazer corys. They are not a fish that is striking to look at, but they sort of grow on you. :D Fully mature C. aeneus can have up to 300 or so eggs at a spawning, but these are still young. My guess is that they are laying 40-50 of them, and not all of them have been hatching.

I was wondering how the cory fry would do with the frozen bbs. It sounds like they are taking them well, and that's good. It just seems like an awful lot of work to hatch them. You are doing a good job with the water changes. It's a bother, but well worth the effort.

Here's a link to a thread one of our members started. He sells microworms and other live food cultures in the UK. Perhaps some time you would like to give them a try.

Thanks for the link inchworm, which would you reccomend for my fry now? I will try the microworm for any future spawns and see how i get on with them :)
Thanks and goodluck with your gold shoulders!

Hi Siamese Fighter05 :)

Since I can't speak from experience with using the foods you can get, I can only tell you what I look for and you will have to use your own judgment. I'll learn something here too. :)

I like to feed the fry as much as they can eat, and as often as possible. Since the microworms are living, and don't spoil quickly, they are ideal; they can stay in the tank for these browsers to eat whenever they want. Since you are frozen bbs, which can spoil quickly, you don't really want to leave extra in the tank. If you are successfully getting them to grow with what you are doing, keep it up.

Then you might want to try them with a good quality flake or bits of spirulina disc. Wardly's discs are safe in the water for 12 hours and are a good addition to their diet. They will gradually soften and the fry will nibble on them. They are one of the things that seems to give my fry a boost in growth, but if they are too small, they won't eat them.

When you are ready to move them up, let them try new things. If they eat them, it's good. If not, take the uneaten food away and try again in a week. As long as they are steadily growing, you are doing the right thing. :D

Hi Inchworm and thanks for your reply :D

I get some money friday so i will pop down the LFS and look for those discs you mentioned and to get some higher protein flake food as the one i use for my fish is only 36.5 protein :/
When i try my next spawn which may well be a few months away unless i can get a new 15g i will use some of those microworm that bBigC is selling and see how i get on.
Today i noticed that my frys caudal fins have grow alot so hopefully that is a good sign :D
I have another question for you :)
When is it that you are most likely to lose fry? I was surfing the web last night and came across one or two sites that mentioned they lost more cory fry in the 5-6weeks of their lives? Do you have this experience also? I thought that the first week would be the high mortality rate... :S
Once Again thanks for your help! :)

Siamese Fighter,

How do you keep the bottom of your tank clean? Im afraid to use a siphon for fear of hurting the fry.

Hi barracuda

I know how you feel, i was really scared (still am) of sucking up the fry in the sython.
I use my finger to stir up the bottom watching out for fry, so that all the dirt and uneaten food floats around.
I then just suck out all the floating particles with the sython and then go around with the net collecting any bits i missed :)
I almost sucked up one today  It was fighting the current but just managed to get out, i hope he wil be okay :/
HTH Dan :)

I just thought i'd give the thread an update so you all now how everythings happening :)
The fry are doing good and have been growing nicely, this week i have seen the best growth which is probably because of the variety of foods they have been eating. They are still eating frozen BBS as their main food for now but i give them flake food and sinking catfish pellets. I couldn't find any wardley algae tablets at the LFS, so i guess i will have to bite the bullet and go back into pets at home this weekend :/
The fry's eyes are more visible now i can see their pupils now going   like all cory cats which is a good laugh. They still have see through bodies although there are blodges of dark on them. I doubt i have any albino cories as all the fry have these markings. From my countings i get a minimum of about 65 so im happy with the survival rate for my first spawn, although i know i have a long way to go yet.
They are 19 days old today so they are getting nearer to having a sponge filter in the tank. Just a few questions :)
1. When should i add the sponge filter? I don't mind the water changes at all so i'm in no rush.
2. When i do add the sponge filter how often should i do water changes?
3. Should i add sand when i add the filter to make the fry feel more at home
4. If so how would i get 65 fry from the tank without harming them? :look:

Thanks for any help :D

PS. Does anyone have any good fry growth rate sites so i can compare? I've searched google but haven't come up with anything useful... :fun:

Edit: Hopefully my computer should be back by the start of next week so i can get some piccys loaded up for you :)
