We were making our own beds and doing the vacuum cleaning at the age of 6, washing dishes at 7, cooking dinner by the age of 8, using the washing machine at 9 and working in the shop by the age of 10.
I had a friend Nikki, who was a single mum and had 1 son. By the time he was 5, he could cook scrambled eggs and toast, new how to use the washing machine and could do the washing up. It all comes down to the parents. Nikki and I both agree that the kids should be able to take care of themselves at an early age just in case something bad happens to the adults. The kids are still cared for and looked after, but they are taught basic housework from an early age.
That reminds me of a co-worker I had in the pet shop. He was asked to vacuum the floor and he said "How?" He was 18 and never used a vacuum cleaner or mopped the floors. He got lots of practice after that
