Hi,

About two months ago my Black Moor died, it was around 3/4 years old and shared a tank with a 4 year old goldfish which is now quite big.

What i'm wondering now is if there is a suitable fish that I can add to the tank as a companion for my 4yr goldfish that is in the tank on his own now. I'm wary of adding a small fish that could be eaten by my goldfish that is now over 15cm long.

Many thanks,
Picco

Get another goldfish if the tank is big enough. Goldfish are social fish and like to be with others of their species. Single goldies can get lonely, lovely to see goldies interact with others when kept in small groups.

Hi there,

Thanks for the replies.

The tank is 40cm (W) x 20cm (H) x 20cm (D).

Do you think that is big enough to put another goldfish in there?

Cheers,
Picco

To be honest Picco your tank is to small for the goldie you have now.

Keith.

What is the general guideline on the capacity of the tank to how many goldfish I can have?

Here are a few pics of my fish now.....do you think there is space for another new goldie? I should say that for the past 3-4 years there has been a Black Moor in the same tank with this fish.

Cheers,
Picco

the general guideline for goldies is 20 gallon for the first and 10 gallon for each additional fish obviously the bigger the tank the better and ponds even better

I think you have done well for your goldie to live for that length of time but there will be a lot of people who have a simler setup who have not been so fortunate. Before adding any more fish which imo is not to, put yourself in your goldies current position which would be like living in your bedroom and never leaving.
Have you thought about treating yourself and fish to a bigger tank?

Keith.

I agree with keith. The current tank is too small even for one large goldfish. If you have space in your home, why not treat yourself and the goldfish to a 3ft or 4ft tank? You can find lots of 2nd bargains on Ebay, Gumtree, Aqurist Clssiffied etc. Then you can get your goldfish a few friends and watch them interact and play together. You will love it!

you need to get a new tank, its too small. :fish:
my tank has my 7yr old goldfish and another fish and its about more than 10 times bigger

That tank would be excellent as a small tropical tank (google dwarf puffers or betta. simillans to get an idea) or you could keep a pair of paradise fish and try and breed them or an Invert feature tank if you want to keep it cold.

You do need a larger tank if you want to add a buddy or keep your goldie. Goldfish live for 25+ years and that one looks like a fantail and should be approaching 8" by now (3-4 years old) whilst it looks around 4" in the pics. When fully grown it will be around 12-14" if its environment is restrictive then it is true the goldfish will not grow to its full size. If it is prevented from growing to its full size then it will most likely have organ failure as the organs do not complete their development. If you truly love this fish then why not upgrade its home with a 2nd hand one off ebay really cheap bargains come along (30-40GBP) for mid size tanks that would be perfect for him/her and we can talk you through everything you need. As I previously said you can use the small tank as a new development with fish that are more appropriate for that size tank so you don't have to throw the old one away. There is a lot of options for a small tank but keeping goldfish is not one of them.
