Building A Super Tank

out of curiosity... how exactly do you plan to secure plywood and pond liner to glass...

(PS, I have done similar for a friend using acrylic for a turtle tank, and have a drawn up set of plans... )

I've read recently that its difficult to use normal fish stocking rules for sharks.

They apparently need a certain amount of swimming space. I cant find the article at present, but it was mentioned by the head of London Aquarium in this months PFK. I think my wife tidied it... i'll try and find it before my kids draw on it :)

Why do you want such a big tank? I mean I want a huge tank too but why wouldn't a 100-200 gal tank work?

No, a 100-200 gallon tank would not work. I'm getting some sharks, which is why. And, I've decided against building a tank, which will be very expensive, so I've decided to go with building an indoor pond with the same dimensions, which will cost about $500, unlike the $10,000 people were saying!
All I need for the pond, is 5 pieces of plywood (11.5x5x3' in size), and one piece of glass, and then my filter and heaters, and some liner, and I'm done! The most expensive part of this tank will be the glass and sharks. I've got my eyes on a real beaute here:Epualette Shark, which unfortunetally, costs $400  , but it'll be well worth it!

The pond idea is infininty more likely than the all-glass tank idea. I should get the pond set up in a few months, instead of the few years it would've taken me to earn up the the all-glass tank!

You think the most expensive part will be the glass and sharks??? I think youre greatly mistaken TBH...Sharks need saltwater, and for 2000 gallons (or however much you want) there will be one hell of a lot of it that you will need. Aswell as pumps, buckets, refractometers, RO water and equipment, aswell as the sheer ammount of lights needed to see sharks through 4ft of water...

The place I am planning to order my next tank from doesn't sell a 2000, but they do offer a 1500 and 3000 gallon tank.. these are acrylic tanks though..

New 1500 Gallon 120x48x60 $11,999.00
New 3000 Gallon 120x120x48 $29,999.00

and for a point of reference, the 860 gallon I am hoping to get soon (biggest I can fit through my doors... ) shipping will be another $700 to my driveway, I get to figure out the rest.

another thought that I have seen done. Just use 3 walls of your basement, and add glass to the 4th wall.

ya i just ordered the 45,000 gallon tank.. thinking about putting a blue whale in it

 Seriously! You could fit a hell of a big fish in a tank that's 20x20x15 feet!!!

That is probably the best advice in the thread.

What do you mean?? This pond isn't going to cost that much compared to marine standards!

I can make all the equipment, except the lights, an all-glass tank or acrylic tank of this exact same size would cost over $10,000 for the tank alone.

I've decided to make the glass viewing port smaller, so it will cost less. A 3,590 gallon shark pond with all of the equipment, sand, live rock, wood, glass, ect. should cost about $2,500 grand total. See the difference in price?

That would be awsome to have a tank that big :hyper: . You're gonna need to know how to scuba-dive. How else would you CLEAN the tank??? What if all you're fish die that's like $600 going down the drain. All I (we!) have to say is good luck with that. (I'm on your side though :shifty:)

You are aware that marine tanks need in the region of 20x per hour water turn over, thats 70,000 gallons of water an hour that need to be pumped. A pump capable of doing this is not only going to be very expensive to buy it is also going to draw a lot of power and cost a lot to run, it will even need its own 3 phase electrical connection.

You must be EXTREMELY rich to think about doing this.

Or extremely stupid.
