I don't want to breed, but I read somewhere that they can be sexed by the shape of the dorsal fin. You are right though they have never been bred in captivity, and they also don't breed well in the wild,which is why there numbers are declining.I didn't do my research before I bought this guy and another red tail along with it...needless to say he is the survivor.He stressed the other out by chasing it so much until one day it died.He/she is however only a little aggressive towards my tiger barbs these days and only when they come close to his space.Not a good pic but here it is eating watermelon with my pleco.
