Hey,
My Two O's used to be so friendly with each other. They would swim together and Dance all over the tank, And yeah sometimes they would lip lock and pick on each other. But lately my male has been constantly chasing, and beating on my Female and she is smaller than him I am worried for her safety but I cant take her out I have nowhere to put her, Is this just normal I have been reading on websites that one O may kill another while Breeding is there any way I can prevent this from happening?I am very concerned I raised them both since they were only half an inch long now they are 4 and 5 inches long. And she has scars all up and down her body it has been one week of this already and some pretty good bashes, Should I use Melafix or Ich Guard? its going to be expensive if I do its a 90 Gallon Tank!Maybe they are both alpha and are having trouble deciding who is boss (I think he won and as far as I'm Concerned he can stop now)If I have to separate them I will but that means spending money I dont have!

Thanks a million!

Are they male and female? As far as I know there is no real certian way to sex Oscars. This sounds more typical of two males.

I dont think that is possible, But it would make sense. I have observed for over a year they were "in love"(Dancing, Being territorial, Fighting and lip lock as well as rapidly changing colours which is typical for O's when they are in Breeding fashion. And her anal fins are alot shorter than his, Her mouth looks llike a trout and his does not, And I know Ozzy is a Male because we had him in with another Female and they laid eggs and then ate them then she died of exploded diaphram.

had to separate them, not so much fun but it is for the best. She is beaten all of one side completely I think you might be right about them both being males, Also a guy at the pet store said there's only 2 people in Canada to breed Oscars in captivity, is this true????If anyone has had sucess breeding these beautiful Animals please I need help with this pair. I really want them be happy in a semi-natural enviroment.

Thanks A Million!~

The only way you could really know that your Oscar is a male or female, is have them breed (duh, haha). To find a pair, you should usually buy 4-5 juveniles and raise them and naturally let them pair off, then remove the rest of them. If you bought the two Oscars together, there is a 50/50 chance that the other is a male, so good luck trying to quell the fighting!

Well I figured as much:( Thanks so much for the help! I was afraid of this. I have to sell them off:( or get another tank to put them in.

Thanks A Million!
