Breeding My Discus

Well, even with 75 fry you should be able to bring several to maturity! I would be happy if I would get 75 fry from my killies, that is!
It's the first 5 days after free swimming that is the difficult bit, even if there were 4 times as many. The second pair have a brilliant batch of eggs, and it looks like I should get a really good number of wrigglers from them. The only potential problem is that it will be their very first brood, so I don't know how they will react to the fry.

The next 7 days will tell. I think i have ironed out all the problems from before..........that is until I discover a new problem this time!

I am ever the optimist though

So hows the fry gettin on mate? This gona be THEE batch that breaks the mould?

G

Sorry mate, not been online, as I was busy with some work stuff. I think I let the water get too soft! Am sure you know that the eggs need to absorb water for the embryo to separate from the egg. If the water gets too soft then the egg can absorb too much water. I think this happened as none of the Blues eggs hatched, and yet they looked very good right up to the 48 hour point(when they should have hatched). The other pair ate the fry, as I think there was too few.

However, they spawned again last night. I am trying to get the water balanced correctly and adding Discus Essential Minerals, and using a buffer on the pH. Man this is tough!

Thanks guys. I seem to have taken two steps backwards for some reason. I just feel a bit disappointed that I seem to be making such a meal of it. Feels like I am missing something obvious. here's hoping.

I think that might have done the trick. There are about 400 eggs and all but 2 look fertile!

They should hatch sometime tomorrow.........Com'on the wrigglers!!!!!!!

Lol your avatar already suggests that solicitation is welcome! Dr. Fish Massage + Show?

Good luck with this batch. Glad to hear there are so many. You have something going right if they lay eggs this crazily.

The egg laying I have cracked(pardon the pun), just got to work out getting the little guys to make it. Am trying hard.

That would work for sure, but would be kind of cheating. If you remember the original Pigeon Bloods I started out with in this blog? Well I sold them to the farm as they were desperate for a pair of Pigeons, as they didn't have any. I did not want to let them go, but the owners of the farm are really good friends, so I buckled. Well, that pair have already had three successful broods, in the fish farm, totaling around 200 young.

I will get some of their kids early next year, when they have grown, and I build my new tank.

They are moments away from hatching, and looking so good. The biggest brood so far.

Ooops.....please tilt your head to the right to view that picture in the correct plane!
