Breeding My Discus

I know we have been here countless times already, but these eggs are looking so good. Only a handful, out of around 300, are not fertile. The embryos have all developed really well, and the parents behavior and colours are better than I have seen for a long time. Dad is really aggressive and attacks the siphon and my hand with serious vigor when I am cleaning.

Sounds just like Daddy Jack when I go in to wash the sides of the tank! He bites the bejeezus out of me!

Got to be a good sign, because the last time he behaved like this was when we managed free swimmers. I am sure the parents must know when things are good with their brood

Yay! Always good when the fishes attack then. Can't wait for them to wriggle.

Let's not only hope for strong wrigglers but also that the temperature changes during the night were the missing link!

I've convinced myself that was the issue, as I can't see anything else wrong. Should know when they hatch, as the last few batches have been weak from the get go.

They are hatching now, but instantly started to fall off the cone again. So I removed the wire to let the parents try to gather them up. It might help if the wrigglers get a quick clean in the parents mouths to help separate the fry from the egg shell. They are busy as anything now, trying to get the wrigglers sorted. I will leave them to it

Here's a pic of what is going on. Hundreds of wrigglers, but their hair gel has lost it's stick! They are all falling off the cone into the lip at the bottom. Parents are trying hard to put them back, but they are falling off again. I will see what happens over the coming hours, and then decide whether to leave the wire guard off or put it back, and hope the fry will still develop to the swimming stage ok.
