Hope things are going better this time around - just for interest I looked up a breeding discus website last night looking at info and talking to a friend and it said that after hatching the female is removed and the male can rear the young alone - so hopefully you might be better off with just the male in there. Anyway looking forward to the next instalment of the saga LOL

Well Dad lost interest in his kids, and only had his mind on food!

So I had a go at putting Mum back in the mix, and the feud started right back up! Biting and slapping, but no kiss and make up! I sat and watched them for 30 minutes to try and work out what was what. Mum was desperate to have her kids back while Dad just wanted to cause trouble

. So a restraining order was placed on Dad, and as of yet 'NO' visitation rights have been granted!

I left Mum alone with her kids and she was great, didn't move from them. Kids are just starting to swim, and are finding their parent to feed without trouble. Also, and unlike before, Mum is relaxed and just letting the little fry swim around her. Looking good!

A short video of my little dudes starting to swim with Mum...........(please excuse Mum's massive poop!

, 'tis most un-ladylike)

Congrats! So glad it's happening this time :good: they are so tiny and cute! Well done :)

great vid! ya the poo is gross... lol jk

anyway... how long before its safe to say 'were in the clear'??

5-7 days and they can then eat newly hatch brine shrimp. So that is the end of the difficulties, as from there on, it's just growing them, and that only requires clean water and food.....easy

Fingers still crossed then at this stage LOL Looking nice - she seems so peaceful and content in that video.

Yep, it will be a little while before I can uncross them

I just need a little luck now.

Hi DevotedToDiscus

Just wanted to say this is a great thread - glad to see you are finally having some luck. Looking forward to seeing more pics when they get bigger - when do they start looking discus shaped, as it were?

Keep up the good work! :good:

What an odyssey this has been! I have been a devoted thread watcher since the beginning and am ecstatic that have gotten them so far this time! I have a pair of angels who are having the same trouble. Dad punishes mom intensely after every failure, and I guess the stress is starting to stunt her growth, so I have decided to strip their eggs for awhile and feed and condition them before allowing them to try again. They get to almost free swimming, then the fry die, despite pristine water. The da chases the mom away and stops letting her take care of them. If I remove the da, she ignores the babes anyways and they die.

I feel for you. Their behavior and temperament is the only area I really don't know how to change yet, and it is my biggest stumbling block with these two fish. I think it has a lot to do with age, as they really are quite young. I know that I should sometimes just let them fight it out, as it is all part of nature, but it is hard to watch as I think they might hurt each other

. Loving the challenge though!

I feel the same, as my pair is also quite young. Their bodies are the size of an american half dollar. The tank I am using is a 55 us gallon, so I believe I have stable enough water parameters, I feed the fry with a wash of fry food using a bulb syringe washed gently over them.

What, if anything, have you done differently this time that you feel has brought you so far? I totally stole your filter idea so there is little or no current in the tank, and the last batch did make it further than ever before.

How do you soften and lower your waters ph? I see seachem discus buffer, but am nervous about trying it without another, more experienced opinion. How often do you feed bs to your pair to keep them in condition?

Sorry about the questions, but discus and angels are so closely related in behaviour and husbandry needs, I figure your my go-to guy!

I did switch to using RO water and lowered the Total Dissolved Solids as low as is safe(60ppm), but that was to get a higher egg fertilization rate so that I could get a better number of fry. So if you are getting fry in the first place then no need for this. I use Seachem Acid Regulator to adjust the RO water to a pH 6. I try to avoid chemicals were possible, and have found the addition of Eheim Torf Pellets(Peat) in the filter has really help the water quality, and triggers spawning. If you are not running an external filter, then you can simply hang the bag of peat in the tank.

I only feed Brine Shrimp up until they spawn, and they get about 2-3 tea spoons full 4-5 times a day. After that I switch to purely frozen bloodworm, as this limits waste in the tank and is easy to siphon up any uneaten worms.

We can search the internet and find all sorts of information these days, but amid all the good is a lot of bad, and nothing is a rule, so it is all about learning from experience IMO. I bred some fry from a different pair quite sometime ago, and didn't even try, they just did it so easily. So it shows that not all fish are the same, as these 2 have been quite challenging, but then if it were easy everyone would be doing it, and you could buy these fish 10 for a dollar

Anyway, do feel free to ask any questions, and if I think I have some useful information then I will be happy to share it

I googled the torf pellets, and it says to not use activated carbon at the same time. Did you step up water changes to cope?

My male angel is supposedly a hard type to breed, as is your red spotted turq discus,I think that is what your pair is? My male is a German black ghost angel. My female is a wild-black koi cross. I am attempting to breed in some vigor in the German line. I have a German female coming in another month or so but it is a long ride from germany to here and I will have to drive to pick her up and re-package her like I did the male. It almost killed the male and I am praying the female survives the trip. She is going to be my birthday present! These guys are RARE and I am really hoping I can get them breeding.

You are always a pleasure to converse with and I totally appreciate your time and advice. ;)
