My fiance's parents are in town visiting us, and just a few minutes ago, my fiance asked what type of dog Hooch, from "Turner and Hooch" was. Never having seen the movie myself, but being somewhat familiar with what Hooch looked like, I said "I think he was a boxer." My fiance's mother agreed. My fiance's father did not agree. I looked it up and found that Hooch is a French Mastiff (Bordeaux).

Then another "dicsuccion" ensued when I said that boxers and bordeaux's look pretty similar, and that I could see how they would easily be mistaken for eachother. My fiance's father suggested that I should post a topic online to see if other people think that these dogs look similar to eachother or not. This is where you come in. Let us know what you think!

The one on the left is the Bordeaux and the one on the right is the boxer

I think not at all :)
The single pic of the mastiff you posted can be quite misleading and that of a young dog.
Look at this mature mastiff - in my opinion no resemblance.

Thanks for posting those, bloo. I just posted the two pictures that we were arguing over over here. The picture of the mastiiff happened to be the first one that I found. Our "discussion" over here was about the two pictures that I posted.

Ah ok :) well in that case, there is a small similarity between those specific two pictures - but that would be a skewed comparison for the two breeds. But as for the two breeds in general, definitely none in my opinion.

And as for Hooch (if you see the movie) he is a gigantic huge muscular, stout dog with an enormous big sloppy mouth - whereas boxers are very slight compared ;)

I don't think I'll ever see the movie. I know what happens, and I can't handle things like that.
I'm so pathetic that I can't even watch a lot of Disney movies.

Well you probably didn't miss much - though it was very good at the time - Tom Hanks was just about only a boy back then

In the first pictures they look very much alike. But with Bloo's pictures...I suppose the face is slightly similar, but other then that I don't see much resemblance.

I have that movie on DVD!! I LOVE Hooch, i always wanted a dog like him

He's definately not a Boxer - I would say he's a mastiff or mastiff cross, he looks a lot like the one bloozoo posted though :)

I voted not at all. Their facial features and skeletal structure are totally different.

While they both have wrinkly heads and jowls, even in those pics you can see that the mastiff is more jowly (is that a word? if not, it should be, its fun to say). Also, even in that picture, you can see that the boxer is more sleek and lean, whereas the mastiff is more bulked up (even as a puppy). Either way, they're both adorable breeds, and I love Turner and Hooch. But I'm a sucker for the big drooly dogs.

Not at all imo. A boxer is completely dainty compared to a mastif...they may have some remotely similar facial features (when the mastif is a puppy), but that's as far as it goes. Body wise/temperment/everything else...it's nothing similar.

And yeah, and I also don't think I could ever own something that drools like that..it'd be like living with a cow . @ the thought of having big pools of slimey slobber lying all around your house, car, and furniture..YUCK lol.

Can you imagine getting up in the middle of the night, sock footed (OMG or barefoot) and stepping in that in the dark...
