Hi,

As a newbie, just wondering how to pronounce the name of these fish!

Is it like Beta - as in Alpha BETA Gamma

Or like "better" - as "I fell better"

Thanks!

Adam

There's no real answer, since everyone pronounces it differently. The actual pronunciation is beh-tah, much like "better". IMO, there's no written law,it varies.

I have heard people pronounce it in two different ways, but when I met two gents who are both into Betta's, one from Malaysia and the other from Singapore, Amir Gan and Phil Ngo, both pronounce it "beh-tah."

In our club we all pronounce it different  But we all mean the same thing. I say "bay-tah" and I know that probably grates on the nerves of some of the "beh-tah" people, but they've grown to accept it. Plus it's a real relaxer for the newer members who say "bay-tah",too.

Sorry, wuv, edited my sentence while you were replying.

I've always said "bay-tah", but many in my club were "corrected" at a show and now always say "bet-tah". Drives 'em batty that I still say "bay-tah", but they gave up correcting me. Then again, I also drive them nuts by continuing to say "plaa-kat" rather than "plah-cot"........ I just tell them I'm from Minnesota, we talk funny. ;)

I use bother interchangeably. Its technically "beh-tah" but I'm a pushy annoying American, so I'll pronounce it wrong if I want.

I've alwasy heard it pronounce bay-ta.

The correct pronunciation is beh-tah and since I can't bring myself to knowingly mispronounce a word, that's what I say.

I use it in mix, though if left to my own devices I'll also say it "correctly", "beh tah". I'll sometimes switch to "bay tah" when in mix company so as to come off as less pretentious.

You say, 'tom ato', I say, 'tomah to'
You say, 'pohtay toh', I say, 'pota toh'
potato, patato, tomAto, tomaHto, let's call the whole thing off....

It's beh-tah, you can see that in the dictionary. I'm guilty of saying bay-tah before I actually got any.

I say it bay-tah even though I know it is beh-tah, when people ask me for the name of the fish, I explain the scientific name is beh-tah, but the common name is bay-tah, cause thats what everyone calls it here...
