So I was just wondering if colours of betta's grow as they get older, when I got my guy he was all blue with a red front fin, now, i noticed he's getting red stripes in his blue tail - is this normal? I've heard that bloodworm buffs them up and gives them plenty of neutrients etc.

Yes, they can do. I know that marbles in particular can change quite dramatically throughout their life looking like a different fish at various stages.

Had a marble fish which was basically white with blue patches that changed into a royal blue butterly. You'd never have known he was the same fish if you saw him at the different stages.

colors can change as they age, also when they are sick or not feeling well they tend to fade.

When you bring a betta home for the first time, they change pretty dramatically once given a better environment. Usually colors that were really subdued pop a lot more. Your guy probably had a bit of a red wash that is starting to show as his colors become more vibrant.

They do change quite a bit with time as well (like others have said). Marbles do so the most.

I had a sky-blue CT that I was about to name sky. Now he is more red/purple with blue washes. More "exotic" type bettas that are bred for shows have pure colors that should not develop washes nor change as much (if at all).

my Neptune looked dark blue with a greenish wash to him when i got him, but now there is next to no green, and he is just a magnificent dark blue with a little red :) And Baby was not anywhere near as brightly coloured as he is now, his mustard is actually pretty bright orange! Much brighter than a lot of mustard gas bettas I see in pics :)

They seem to get darker when happie, and fade out when they are sad, UI'd say you have a happie betta.

when i kept my fighter in a community tank, it went almost all white, then i put it in a 3gall and fed it good fish food and it went back to normal

The most noticeable is the bars on the body. Some females always have them, but they become darker when they are stressed. They take the form of two to four (usually three) horizontal lines running the length of the body and appear usually on stressed bettas male/female. They can be solid black when the betta is really upset, and they are particularly striking because usually combined with a fading of the other colours due to stress. It is a good warning sign against buying that betta unless you are in the market for rescues. The other case of this is the vertical bars that develop on females in breeding condition when they are eyeing off an interesting male. There is a very good photo of this phenomenon at www.bettatalk.com

Are the red stripes pretty wide and bold or are they thin lines, like veins running through his tail, because a nasty infection called septecemia will ususally cause red streaking in the fins.

The couple i've had with Septacemia developed little red dots that spread into a cluster.

septecemia is prob the cause as said, i've had some come in at times and daily large water changes for 7 days clears this, i do 100% each time.

My fighter was love at first sight because he was all white, and I'd never seen that before! He only had a blue opalescent sheen. And a few dark freckly spots. His name is Frosty Monkey (as in Frosty the Snowman and Arctic Monkeys). He's now very PINK, and he developed a red spot on his lower fin which has been spreading ever since. It's like blood is seeping throughout him. He's going slightly redder in general and also has a small blue spot on his fin. He's about a year old. It'll be interesting to see what he turns into....
