In the future when my nasty Pink Jewel Tetras have died off, I wanted to get a new schooling fish, but I don't know what schools best. I know rummys are probably the best, but I don't care for them and they are too sensitive for me. I'm leaning torwards amazonian fish but I'm open to asian species or austonesian species (rainbows, rasboras, barbs etc) Its a 20 gallon, nicely planted, future stocking will be

8-10x of whatever schooling fish
6x Kuhli Loaches
2x Sparkling Gouramis
2x Peacock Gobies
50780451 bajillion cherry shrimp (kidding)
2x Amano Shrimp

Any suggestions?

My 19 espeis are schooling great in my qt!

No completely different species. Espeis are trigonostigma espei and I don't know what harlequins are but they're different.

I would go for Marble hathets, They will stay at the top of the tank 99% of the timeand in a decent sized group i found they shoaled quite well. I had 20 Lemon tetra in a 30G and they stuck together quite well.

But they are quite skittish you must remember.

Poor pink jewel tetras! I feel bad that they are unloved by you. I find all Hyphessobrycon species to be cute, myself.

my neons always travel around as a shoal they look really good, but there is one that wrecks it because it seems to prefer swimming with the minnows

Hengels Rasbora and "Debauwi catfish" (P. buffei) are excellent schoalers too.

Its not that I hate them, they are gorgeaous fish, but they are horribly aggressive to one another.

I don't like hatchets, they're too skittish and sensitive.

The Hengels look like rasboras and I really like the debauwi catfish, but wouldn't they dwell at the bottom all day long? I already have kuhli loaches to occupy the bottom. Sad thing is, I've never seen these guys anywhere :/

Are cardinal tetras any good schoolers? I hear they are good schoolers but then others say they only school if threaned or scared and in larger tanks and numbers
