Dan (& all others who said this) - I disagree that if an animal is dying out it automatically means it's meant to happen. The reason that there are many organisations trying to save species is because humans are systematically destroying their habitats. Ordinarily, even with all the pollution & whatnot created by humans, many of these animals would not be on the verge of extinction, if not for humans destroying their homes. Hence, these organisations are set up to help raise awareness & money to get back the habitats. It has nothing to do with natural selection, inclusive fitness or any other evolutionary mechanism - it's a simple fact of life that any organism needs an appropriate environment in which to live - with whole sections of their environment disappearing instantly, these animals have no hope of evolving, since this occurs over the course of millions of years. Yes, humans are very quickly multiplying, we have the powers of speech, writing, knowledge, learning, & all that stuff we define humanity by - but I don't think that gives us the right to treat other animals like dirt, whether you believe they are a lower life form or not. If you are of the opinion that they are less than us (very wrong IMO), then at least consider that one day we'll probably be needing them - any one of these animals on the verge of extinction could hold the cure to cancer or AIDS or whatever.
In relation to the actual topic - as I've already said, I disagree with it's creation & esp. its sale, even though it was originally for medical research I believe. But I do agree with whoever said that the money spent creating/perfecting these creatures would have been better put elsewhere, eg. back into medical research (preferably not on animals), or on conserving nature, etc..
