err because this thread is about the glowing fish

Excellent point PT. Bettas have been "genetically modified" in the scense that they did very selective breeding to get them to look like they do.

BIGMAC, in reply to your last post, why was the thread on glowing fish started in the first place? i havent seen anyone post a thread to talk about the other fishes who have been messed with.

P.T.

the reason i started this thread was because i was looking for a pic for my signature and i found the news report on a website i went on.I would have put it on here wotever the fish or animal.I think all animal cruelty is evil and this was just a topic i came across while looking for a photo.

I agree with you 100% that all animal cruelty is evil and sadistic. However it was not generally established that this was concidered animal cruelty. Certainly not by me anyways.

Sorry i dissagree i think it is cruel to mess with nature, not just the glowing fish but all the others that you mentioned too,but this is my opinion and i aint trying to start an argument just saying what i think. ;)

Yes, this subject was dealt with in an earlier thread. The latest issue of Tropical Fish Hobbyist has an excellent article on this fish, anyone with any ill-feelings about this fish needs to get a copy and read up. There is a lot of mis-information going around and the media is hyping it. For fish info, I would trust the editors at TFH before I would trust any news agency bulletin.

instead of wastin money on makin fish glow, or pop things out of their heads (ok ok too far) why dont they spend good money on tryin to figure out how to help pandas to breed and stuff like that???? but nooooo we want things that glow, with the help of a black light -_-
There are huge organizations that "help panda's breed". pandas are "exchange animals" to help them breed. There are organizations (or at least one) that is trying to help the White Tigers too. And the list goes on. You name me a known endangered animal, and there is at least one organization bending over backwards to "save" it (I agree with the earlier statement to a point. If whatever animal is dying out, maybe it's supposed to. Of course, this is not an absolute, some animals need our help). Each "market" is totally different, so saving the pandas vs create glowing fish is an irrelevant and bad comparison. One project is to make money to save an animal. The other project is simply to make money. Different agendas, different group of people. Neither are wrong (in and of themselves). I do agree it is unneccesarry to create a glowing fish (unless, like the earlier glo-fish it was created for a reason). There are plenty of cool fish without needing to make more. I don't feel they are needed, but I also don't feel that the people who created them are "evil" and I totally disagree with the implication that money spent on creating a glowing fish would, or even should be pumped into the "save the panda" fund.

If people want to start on better ways to spend money than creating glowing fish, I can rant on and on about better uses for money. I personally don't care for people who support professional sports. The momey that is payed to professional athelets and mostly the owners of professional teams is needed and useful in so many other places. I rarely hear anyone complaining about that. It's the same type of situation. Some people want to support something other than what I think they should, that is there business. I don't have to like it but I can resect their right to do what they want with their time and money. Same with glowing fish makers. There are plenty of other people to save the panda.

Dan (& all others who said this) - I disagree that if an animal is dying out it automatically means it's meant to happen. The reason that there are many organisations trying to save species is because humans are systematically destroying their habitats. Ordinarily, even with all the pollution & whatnot created by humans, many of these animals would not be on the verge of extinction, if not for humans destroying their homes. Hence, these organisations are set up to help raise awareness & money to get back the habitats. It has nothing to do with natural selection, inclusive fitness or any other evolutionary mechanism - it's a simple fact of life that any organism needs an appropriate environment in which to live - with whole sections of their environment disappearing instantly, these animals have no hope of evolving, since this occurs over the course of millions of years. Yes, humans are very quickly multiplying, we have the powers of speech, writing, knowledge, learning, & all that stuff we define humanity by - but I don't think that gives us the right to treat other animals like dirt, whether you believe they are a lower life form or not. If you are of the opinion that they are less than us (very wrong IMO), then at least consider that one day we'll probably be needing them - any one of these animals on the verge of extinction could hold the cure to cancer or AIDS or whatever.

In relation to the actual topic - as I've already said, I disagree with it's creation & esp. its sale, even though it was originally for medical research I believe. But I do agree with whoever said that the money spent creating/perfecting these creatures would have been better put elsewhere, eg. back into medical research (preferably not on animals), or on conserving nature, etc..

Im not sure if it was this exact company, but the glofish was originally uhhhh.. "designed" (sorry there is no other word to use) to check on pollution in waterways. They would fluoresce "selectively" in the presence of certain chemicals.
So the research did have a purpose, but now they are marketing it.

Interesting....I thought they were first "discovered" in a lab when someone decided that inserting the glow gene from a jellyfish into a zebra danio would be a clever thing to do coz they thought it'd make a certain organ glow when exposed to different things so they could study it easier....except the whole fish glowed.....

Like I said, im not sure if its exactly the same company but quoting from their website:
"Fluorescent zebra fish were specially bred to help detect environmental pollutants. By adding a natural fluorescence gene to the fish, scientists will be able to quickly and easily determine when our waterways are contaminated. The first step in developing these pollution detecting fish was to create fish that would be fluorescent all the time. It was only recently that scientists realized the public's interest in sharing the benefits of this research. We call this the GloFish™ fluorescent fish. "

and

"To achieve their goal, scientists are in the process of adding a "switch" that will cause the always fluorescing zebra fish to selectively fluoresce in the presence of environmental toxins. A non-fluorescing fish will signal that the water is safe, while a fluorescing fish will signal trouble. Although these fish are not currently available, scientists hope to complete this work soon. To help further the research, a portion of the proceeds from sales of all GloFish™ fluorescent fish goes directly to the lab where these fish were created."

Edit: Oh, by the way, the website is www.glofish.com
