hi all....

has anyone heard of , or know anything about the asian river sole .......i purchased one from my local supplier & was told it will be fine in my setup as long as i had sand & fed it frozen bloodworm !
i did both & it only lasted 3 weeks !!!

i'm having real trouble finding out anything on the internet about these fish , so was wondering if anybody here knows anything about them ?

thanks in advance

I'm not 100% sure on this so i'll say some basic stuff, they should be kept in quarintine to get them to start feeding and some are brackish.

Do a search for Brachirus in the oddball and brackish thread. That's the commonest genus of Asian sole. You could also check out my brackish FAQ, here, which has some links to Fishbase to help you in identifying the species you have.

Assuming you get the water conditions right, the main thing with these fish is (a) they are nocturnal and (b) they will not compete for food with things like catfish. Ideally, keep in a single species aquarium, or else mix with things that do not take food from the bottom of the tank (e.g., hatchetfish, halfbeaks, or glassfish).

There are some genuinely freshwater species of Asian sole, but there are also some brackish water ones, and yet others that would probably prefer marine conditions. In the UK, Brachirus orientalis (a brackish species), Brackish panoides (fresh/brackish) and Brachirus harmandi (freshwater) have been positively identified. I have seen Cynoglossus species in the UK at least once, so they may appear, too. The species traded in the US and elsewhere may be different. The only book currently in print with anything useful to say on these fish is the Aqualog "Brackish Water Fishes" book. I wrote a fairly detailed article on freshwater soles for the June 2006 TFH magazine, if you can get a hold of that.

Cheers,

Neale
