I've got a Rio 180, Fw trop community, and have to say it makes next to no noise at all. The loudest thing you can hear from the setup is the slight buzz of the airpump.
All the Jewel tanks i have seen have the filter box attatched by 4 slimline suckers, it can easily be removed with a slim blade
I also have a 72x18x15 Fw tank running with a Fluval 304 and a Prime 30, again, noise levels are next to zero, bar the airpump.
The living room tank is a 30l Biorb (planted) and houses Endler fry, this one runs totally silent as the air pump is in a different room
My bedroom tank is a 10x8x5 and is built into a wall recess and is filtered by a home made small external filter/heater unit. This tank houses 5 neons and 3 tiny shrimp

i find the jewel compact H filter totally silent. only think you ever hear is if you dont place the heater properly (it rattles) the powerhead it self is almost unnoticible. mines nearly 3 years old now too

Juwel changed the powerhead system early last year.

My mate has an early Juwel Rio 180, and it has the 'old' type powerhead. It's nearly silent in operation. I have the 'new' type. It's louder and more intrusive, and has been commented on by himself (my mate), and by other visitors, especially late at night.

My LFS knows all about it. I had them change the powerhead three times before I gave up. Yes, you can improve things a little by fiddling with the outlet position of the pump, and making sure the heater is fully down in its slot, but it still rumbles away.

It may or may not get on your nerves. It just depends on how sensitive you are to noise. I'm sensitive to noise, so it's noisy to me. I could never live with it in my bedroom. But thats just me....

I am quite sensitive to noise when I'm trying to get to sleep, hence me posting this particular topic. If I buy a 125 or 180 and find it too noisy, is this an option for me:

1. buy an external quality filter e.g. eheim. disconnect the in-built filter and run the tank through the external filter.

2. if it still proves too noisy (which is surely unlikely from what I've read about eheim filters) then build a small sound proof box to house the filter unit in.

that's my plan of action, workable do you think? also, please excuse my ignorance, but do I need to consider an air pump when buying the 125 / 180, or is this not required? if I need one this would have to be housed in a custom built sound proof box as I'm led to believe even the best ones give off some noise?

Well,

I'm just waiting to be paid, so I can bin the compact H, the Rena XP1, and the fluval 4+ running my biowheel.

I'm pinning my hopes on an eheim too, so I'll let you know. I have been told the Hydor Prime series of filters is quiet too, but you try getting a LFS to stand up for what they promise. Two of my locals have told me once it's paid for, it's mine. Thats after I have specifically asked for the quietest filter they can supply.

Seems to me, unless somebody gets a load of filters in, and conducts some real tests, nobody will be any the wiser.

I have access to a 'Coustic RTA-33'. It's an advanced sound measuring device, normally used in car hifi installations, but its good enough to measure ambient noise levels too. The only problem being getting the manufacturers to hand over the kit to be tested.

I suppose its worth a try. Heres hoping...(not)

:hyper: HECK, I couldn't Live or Sleep if I didn't have a Aquarium in my bedroom.
I've had fish in my bedroom ever since I was about 7 years old, It's Part of the decor...
The Way I've always seen it, You can always find room for the Fishtank, if ya have to SLEEP on the Floor...
When I first got Married my Wife wasn't to keen on the idea...
She liked quite, I told her I need my Fishtank or I'd go into FISHY "Withdrawl"
I told her She'd get use to it and she did, Now if we go Some Place to Quite, She's the one Who can't Sleep.
Go Figure :p
Try it, I expect after the First Few Nights you'll be just fine!!!
Besides on Nights I have trouble Fallin asleep, I lay there and Watch my Fish, You'd be superized they are better Then any SOMINEX will ever will be.

I have the 55g and the 10g in the bedroom. It is relaxing to watch the fish before I go to sleep. I used to run a fan for "white noise" now I just listen to the filters. I also have a bubble bar in the big tank, so the air pump makes some noise from that. It is not overwhelming.

I have the 20g on a file cabinet in the computer room. It is relaxing to listen to the pump on it too, but yes noisier if the water level goes down any. That is a Penguin biowheel. I do enjoy watching the fish as I wait on a download. :)

I'm not sure you need any more opinions after the massive response to your thread so far, but just in case I'll chuck in mine ;)

We have a Juwel Rio 125 in my baby daughters bedroom, it was bought a few months ago and I can honestly say that it is virtually silent...the noise of the CO2 bubbles popping out of the tube are louder!

Good luck with things!

>>> CO2 bubbles popping out of the tube

Completely off topic, but just bubbling CO2 through a pipe into the tank is very inefficient. The CO2 needs to be in contact with the water for a while in order to dissolve.

Yup, ND uses a ladder, 2 infact...but yeah for people who are setting up DIY CO2, you need a way to diffuse it.

I don't know about jewel filters, but when I had my tank in my bedroom, the thing that drove me nuts was the airstone! The thing vibrates like crazy and can make loads of noise. But of course you dont have to run an airstone, but if you do, a little tip is to sit it on a sponge...the sponge then absorbs the vibrations. :)

I've always kinda liked the Sound of an Airstone, although I've never had any problems with Vibrations though :fun:

But then again Whenever I've ever had an Airstone next to the side of my tank, I've always used "One" of those Suction Cup, Airline Holders to hold it in place though.
Maybe this is Why I've never had any problems???
Most times my Airstones are Put either Under an Ornament of some sort, Or under a Rock.

One thing though "The Idea of putting the Airstone on a peice of Sponge is a "GOOD ONE".
I'll have to KEEP that in mind the next time I put one close the GLASS....
Thanks.

The Fluvals are completely silent if you put the output under water, and if you put it at the water line it gives the aquarium a stream or creek sound.

actually its not the airstone I had trouble with, but the actual...um...thing. I dunno what you would call it..the piece of machinery that runs it. on the 2 that I got years ago that didn't go in the water. They had rubber feet but I found that didn't help.
