I'm beginning to think that I really have got a dodgy powerhead in my Rio 180!

Am I alone on the noise thing from Juwel filters?

Sorry to hijack a little, but this has REALLY got me going now.

I'm going to take it up with Juwel tomorrow. Again.

don't worry about hijacking as you're staying within what i need to know ;)

if it's the case that juwel filters are, in the main, pretty noisy then i'd like to know before i part with my cash!

If the powerhead is not situated perfectly within the housing and/or the seal between the powerhead and adaptor is not fitted correctly and/or broken, you will get a significant noise. if all is well and there is still a large amount of noise the impeller maybe scored, doubtfull on a brand new one but more than likley on a used one.

:(

my worst fears realised ... someone saying NOT to do it. some noise i could live with, a constant drone i couldn't :/

now depressed :-(

I have two eheim canister filters, the 2215 and 2217 in my room for my 55 gallon, and I sleep here perfectly. Noise is absolutely minimal, a very very slight hum if you try to listen. That's my best recommendation to you, eheim!

Thanks for the tip, I've looked them up on the net and various sites selling them say they're close to silent ... so at worst they can't be very noisy :)

Model I would need is 2213 for a Juwel Rio 125 set up, will I have any problems fitting it or is it straight forward enough?

Nope it's perfectly straight forward, just make sure yours comes with the tap connectors as I've heard some people don't get them, in which case you would be screwed for cleaning. Good luck!

Yep, go for the external.

Cut out the dodgy juwel filter, and leave it in a drawer somewhere.

Go buy a nice Rena XP1, or Eheim 2213, and sleep.

Or do what I did and get a nice dodgy virus just after christmas and end up with damaged eardrums!

Hearing is getting better now. Can understand what the missus means by noisy co2, biowheel, burping Rena, rumbling (reinstalled) Juwel powerhead.......

My Rainbows have started getting amourous. Don't care. Babies on the way....

Thats what we do it for.

PS, Get the tank, but external, get one of my latex pump stands, sleep better.

thanks for the continued advice, I'll be buying a Juwel Rio 125 in a couple of weeks and will get the eheim 2213 as well (with tap connectors!)

i can give ehiem a vote aswell!!

i have a pro 2 running 4ft away from my head when in bed and sleep fine, then to my left there's a Fluval 3+, both are silent.

I'ved never had a Jewel in my bedroom so I can't comment on them.

if your buying a external straight away you might want to consider buying 1 of the ehiem tanks instead which come complete with external filter and saves you cutting the box out.

owning a ehiem myself i think there of much better quality as well. cost is a problem though, your not paying the extra for nothing though!!

oh and the 1 next to my head is the 4ft eheim tank. close the cabinet door with the filter instead and i can't hear a thing!!

I'd assume an internal fluval plus or ehiem aquaball to be the most affordable option for a small quite tank :/

A tank that size isn't worth an ehiem or any other canister for that matter I think you would sleep fine with an aquaclear too

I have a Juwel Vision 180 (tropical) and it's pretty silent (depending on how I choose to direct outflow). I have an extra airpump with airstone and that makes a slight noise, but if that is turned off it's very quiet indeed :D

There is absolutly no noise from Juwel filter system and if you keep to maitance manual then will be fine. I think you would be wasting your money if went out and brought an external filter be for you even had the Juwel filter up and running, just make sure you fit the power head in properly as it can be a bit tight. ;)

Where are you thinking of buying the tank from.

that's what i was planning to do, set up the rio 125 and see what the noise was like over first couple of nights, maybe tweak setup to see if it makes any difference to noise output etc. if (and only if) i felt it was too noisy would i then buy a new external filter for it e.g. eheim.

as for buying the actual tank and stand, will likely go to my local petshop superstore (can't remember the name ... think it used to be petsmart?) as their prices seem reasonable. don't know if that's the ideal place to buy my fish though -_- .
