BigC said it all. We are still very much in the dark ages with regards to treating many forms of cancer. As BigC said, the best way to treat cancer is to prevent it or get an early diagnosis.

Overall, for men, each one of us should get our prostate checked at age 50 (earlier if at high risk). This includes a rectal exam and having a PSA level drawn (prostate specific antigen). Like BigC, I have already had a colonoscopy as well. It is the SINGLE best way to prevent colon cancer. In general, colon cancer begins as a small growth called a polyp. Removing the polyp at an early stage is a 'cure'. One should get scoped at age 50 if there is no family history and earlier if there is.

Women should obtain a baseline mammogram at age 40. Obviously, they should get annual pelvic exams and Pap smears. If there is a strong family history of cancer as is the case of BigC, do as he did. Speak to your family doctor and consider genetic counseling and also possibly genetic testing.

Your best chances at staying cancer free outside of this include doing the following:
  • see a doctor annually for a good medical checkup
  • get a good nights rest
  • eat a healthy diet: avoid saturated fats and grill meats with the fat trimmed off when BBQing; eat plenty of green and leafy vegetables and fiber
  • evidence has been mounting that foods high in anti-oxidants may be beneficial
  • get plenty of exercise
  • use sunscreen if you are out in direct sun for a prolonged period of time
  • avoid tanning beds
  • do as BigC..early prevention, screening and educate yourself. Know.

well my grandma is the only one i personally know that had cancer, she died in 2003, they caught it 1 month too late.

in my family its always switched on my dads side boy girl boy girl every generation, so my dads being extra cautious and my aunts are doing the stuff that SH has stated

My great grandma died from cancer over a year ago. She broke her leg while walking to the bathroom, so they took her to the hospital. They diagnosed her with bone cancer (very very deadly), lung cancer, lymphnode cancer, brain cancer, and cervical cancer. She made it about a year after the diagnosis ( a lot longer than they expected). She never went to the hospital for it, they had a hospice take care of her (for pain management ect.) and eventually she died at home. It really hurt our family, but it brought us together at the same time. Cancer is very hard to deal with. A week after my great grandma died, my grandma (her daughter) was diagnosed with kidney cancer. They froze a part of her kidney and removed it. She is diabetic. Her kidneys are only functioning at 14 percent. When it hits 12, no more meat, and eventually dialysis. Then, her sister was diagnosed with cancer (also a diabetic), and they removed it with surgery. My dad's side does not have a history of cancer or diabetes (except for his step dad, who died from a grapefruit sized cancer cluster in his stomach).

Another cancer survivor here. I had a cancer in my neck and tonsils. It was removed surgically and I also got radiation therapy about 9 years ago. So far no relapse but it is something I have checked every 6 months.
