Amanda's 55g ~~tons & Tons Of Pics!

Thanks.
I don't intend to run all 4 lights any time soon. They are just a bonus. The big light unit was less than the small ones. I only included it so you could see what it looks like. I am only going to run 2 lights. I want to stay under 2wpg.

The brown stuff invaded my tank when it was first set up and just kept getting worse.
There was very little light then. I couldn't have reduced it. There was barely over 1/2 wpg.
Will the new light make it worse?
I added an extra filter. That has helped some.

What is the white looking stuff on the val?

Thanks!

If it goes away on its own... How long does it take? (about)

Does what ever this is on the val go away on its own too?
If not... what is it, and what do I do about it?

Thanks everyone!

The brown stuff is slowing down now, and the plants are showing signs of growth with the new lights already.
I still don't know what is on the val though. I thought it was snail eggs at first, but that isn't what it is. What ever it is is growing.
I am having to wait to get the ottos. I hope to get them soon though.
I am also considering a clown plec. I think that is what it is called. I don't know much about them yet. They were suggested in one of the magazines I get. I will have to check them out.
Thanks :friends:

This is sad! I seem to be the only one interested in my tank. :-(

Thanks llj & nry. At least you do still check in every now and then.

Is my tank that bad? ????

Hi Icegirl, Have just been checking out your thread, I like the plants you have used. Does the brown algae stuff wipe off from the leaves or is it stuck? I have no experience with this sort of algae tho so i don't know what to suggest to get rid of it! I think more plants in there would look better, it does look quite sparse as far as planted tanks go. Could you get some easy growers? As far as Christmas moss as a carpet, it's what I like to do with my moss, but I have found it helps to sandwich it between some mesh with largish holes and weight down the mesh with plant weight. Once it gets hols though it will grow lovely and bushy and I think makes a cool carpet!

:hyper: Thank you!
I feel better now. Yes... most of it wipes off quite easy. There is some that has started to stick now though.
Thank you for looking and reading!

i have just spent 30 minutes reading you thread and i really like your tank by the way how is shays tank goin could u post some pics of her tank

Thanks. It does take a while.
I have nutrafin co2 on the way! (along with a few other items) and glass tops...
I hope to get a few more plants too.

Shay wants to make a few changes in her tank. I will get it updated as soon as she decides what all she wants to do so we can get it done. It shouldn't be more than a few days. She has already shown me most of what she wants to do. It should look pretty good. She has a good eye for this stuff. She is going to be kind of busy now though. She starts pre k in the morning.

I will be doing updates on all the changes in the 3 main tanks in a few days.
The other tanks don't have journals.
I can't keep people checking in on 3 much less 7. :hyper:

Thanks again for taking the time to read and post! :thanks:

Hey, great looking tank so far :) It needs maybe a bit of filling out. I love the vallis, it makes a nice shape in a large group! I hope you have more luck than I did. I wanted mine to grow to the surface and curl over, flowing around in the current and stuff. Instead, it kinda melted :(

Quick question, what was the light unit you bought?

If this works... this is the link to the light I got.

I am using the lights that came with it. I just had to change them around so I would have one of each kind on since I am using just 2 of the 4 lights. This is cool too because when these bulbs go bad I can just use the other 2.

I am planning on getting more of the italian and corck screw val and more e. tenellus for sure. I want something else, but I can't decide what I want. I want something sort of like foxtail or cabomba except maybe not so demanding. I just like the look of them. I am still checking my options.
I have more amazon sword that will be added to this tank too. I am thinking of taking the apongetons out and putting them there.

There are several things I want to change, but I am trying to wait a while before I start moving things around again.
What I am thinking of doing is moving the rotalla to the left back corner where the italian val is.
I want to put the italian val at the back on each side of the path and move the corkscrew val in front of it where it will kind of outline the path.
Then I want to move the red plant (can't spell it...) over just a little to the right.
I want to put the amazon swords in the right back corner.
What ever new plant I decide on will go on the right side/edge.
I am thinking of putting the bulbitis in front of the big filter between the rotalla and the val.
Then I will use e. tenellus as the ground cover.
There will still be the moss on the wood and anubias and ferns here and there on the wood.

Does that sound good, or would it look better another way?
I am very new at this so suggestions are greatly appreciated!
What would you do with it?

Thanks :good:

My nutrifin kit is on the way... finally :D

Hi Amanda, I have been reading your thread since the beginning. HOwever, since I am not very knowledgable on planted tanks, I am of not much help, I'm afraid. But your thread really will help me with my new tank (180 litre bowfront) for which I am planning to start a journal soon.

Keep it up!

Thanks.
I am currently medicating this tank. I had a pest problem.
Once I get that under control I have a lot of brown algae to deal with.
People say that big tanks are easier, but my little tanks never gave me problems like the big ones. I am begining to really not like this tank. I hope it gets better soon.

I believe I have every algae known to man!
I am working on getting some algae eaters ordered. No one has anything except the monster plecs around here.
I found a place a little closer (only an hour away) that will order some otos for me. I am also considering getting some pitbull plecs. Are they good in planted tanks?
Right now I am growing more algae than plants.
I'm not happy! On top of that it will be about 2 weeks before I can get the algae eaters.
I got my nutrifin kit. I set it up, but it didn't do anything. I guess I did something wrong. I am going to wait until I get the algae eaters before trying again. I am going to let them do a little snacking before I start trying to mess with stuff.
My tank is horrible right now. I am about ready to take it down and start over.
Thanks for looking! :good:

Did you use the sachets with the Nutrafin kit or just use sugar and yeast? The sachets are notoriously rubbish!
